The grandfather (voiced by Takeo Jijing) who lives in the old forest in the deep mountain went into the mountain early in the morning to chop bamboo, and found a doll only the size of the palm of his hand in a glowing bamboo shoot nearby. The grandfather without children was so excited that he returned home with the doll in both hands, and the little guy became bigger and bigger in the hands of the grandmother (voiced by Miyamoto Nobuko). In the years that followed, the loving grandfather took care of his princess (voiced by Aki Asakura), while the little girl grew up at an astonishing rate.
