interesting thought experiment

A sci-fi movie costing only $50,000 has made quite a splash among sci-fi fans. It turns out that science fiction is not necessarily a high-cost interstellar war or time travel, but it can also be a science-based fantasy that restores the essence of science fiction.

The film's English name "coherence" means "coherence", and it's actually a thought experiment on the many-worlds theory of quantum mechanics. The world of quantum physics is very different from what we experience. The "Schrödinger's cat" that is talked about by many people and is also mentioned in the film is also a thought experiment describing the quantum world. It describes a cat in a quantum state that is locked in a box, it is in a kind of "Dead and Alive" state, but can be described by a wave function. When the observer opens the box, this wave function collapses, leaving the cat in one of two states: dead or alive. The film describes another theory - the many worlds theory. It argues that the wave function does not collapse when the observer opens the box, but instead creates two unrelated worlds, one where the cat is alive and the other where the cat is dead. Note that the act of observing splits the world, not that the two worlds existed before. That's what Hugh's scientist brother's notes in the film also say.

In our understanding, the act of "observation" should not disturb the observed object, but in the quantum world, this cannot be done, and the observer inevitably becomes a part of the observed quantum object. The movie takes the macro world as an analogy, where the house is the cat's box, and the character is the cat. However, the act of "observation" is more difficult to compare, so events that generate randomness are used instead. For example, what color light stick to take, each person throws dice and records with different colored pens, random items in the box, including previous choices, such as whether to act as a substitute for the dance star (in the last world, the heroine is a successful dancer) actors), these random actions create more parallel worlds without knowing it. So many parallel worlds are created by the characters themselves. It is also possible that countless parallel worlds existed originally and did not increase, but this is even more different from the many-worlds theory.

So what is the role of comets? The comet initially caused some people's mobile phones to shatter for unknown reasons, created some parallel worlds, and more importantly, it made all parallel worlds coherent - different worlds can communicate. That is to say, if there are no comets, throwing dice will still produce parallel worlds, but we will never have the opportunity to communicate with people in another world. According to the anthropic principle, such a parallel world does not exist. But the comet messed things up, which is why the scientist's younger brother told him "if something weird happens, stay inside."

After dawn, the comet left, the parallel world was "decoherent", and there could be no more communication, but the consequences of the previous communication would be preserved, and thus the scene at the end of the film.

There is such a sci-fi hard shell to back it up, but to make a movie look good, it still depends on the charm of the movie itself. Despite its extremely low cost, the film's claustrophobic thrills, suspenseful twists and turns, and imagining the natural reaction and behavior of ordinary people when confronted with such oddities are examples of low-budget films.

Since there is no money to make a big scene, this movie has worked hard on the details. For example, did the interlacing of time and space happen after a power outage? Looking back at the trivial conversation at the party before the power outage, if you scrutinize it carefully, you will find many doubts. For example, when Em was driving in the opening scene, his boyfriend said on the phone: "Before we go to the party, there is something we need to talk about". However, when they met, the boyfriend didn't seem to have anything to say. Another example is that the male protagonist claims to be the star of a popular TV series, but a female guest who is a diehard fan of the show has no impression of him at all. Also, one of the two people who went out first after the power outage came back with an injury on his face. The hostess put a cloth Band-Aid on him, and in the second half of the film, the Band-Aid became transparent... All of this, All based on the assumption "they're not the same person", and the list goes on and on. No one is sure to find the foreshadowing and details buried in the details of the whole movie. Compared with understanding quantum physics, looking for these clues is the most fun of watching this movie.

Looking back, at the dinner table at the beginning of the film, Em told a story. The woman in the story killed her husband, but the next day her husband appeared again, and she felt that this man was not her husband. Now, it seems like a prophecy.

Such sci-fi films are low-cost and highly entertaining. In China, which lacks an industrial foundation, it is truly sad not to put such ideas into practice, but to always stare at the "movie version of "Three-Body Problem" with lofty ambitions.

  • Hugh: Yeah, we're in a different reality because the reality where I am from, my best friend didn't sleep with my wife.

Mike: Hugh, do you not understand what I'm saying? This all started tonight, and if there are a million different realities, I have slept with your wife in every one of them.

  • Hugh: These are Brian's notes from his lesson plan for his class. "Decoherence and Schroedinger's Cat."
