The beauty of German lies in her indifference. When Frau Altman finally said that sentence in German, it was like a kind of identity sharing, an Austrian identification, a Hollywood-style happy ending. Nazi atrocities, in today's Germany, have been implicitly erased. Even if modern Germans reflect on the guilt of the Nazis - like the young German actor featured in this film - it's still a touchy subject - and not just from the perspective of those hurt by the Nazis.
I was literally blown away when I saw Küssen from Klimt. That kind of beauty cannot be experienced by people who are not there - all languages are indeed powerless. So I think that this beautiful portrait of a woman is also worthy of Frau Altman's persistent struggle. The lamentation of destroyed beauty makes me identify with the theme of this film. In that era that I don't want to mention, there are many regrets and pains, but they still have to face it.
woman in gold itself is like an optimistic topic. Helen gave a great performance, but I wouldn't say it's her best. Subjectively speaking, German actors could have performed better if they had been given more opportunities. This play is touching. So still a success. For the boring general audience - most people who don't read a lot and don't have a lot of knowledge - it's worth a look. Including me too.
