In Shanghai in 1941, China's Anti-Japanese War had been going through four years. With the outbreak of the Pacific War and the entry of Britain and the United States into the war, the lives of Westerners in Shanghai's overseas concessions also experienced great turmoil. 11-year-old Jamie is one of them.
On the way to escape, Jamie and his parents were lost. He met Americans Bessie and Frank, who were almost sold by them. The three were transferred to Zhabei concentration camp. In the concentration camp, Jamie understood the cruelty of war, learned the survival philosophy of "doing anything for the sake of food", and met Japanese children who liked airplanes as much as he did. However, deep down in his heart, he has been longing for the day when he will be reunited with his parents.

  • [first lines]

Narrator: [title card] In 1941 China and Japan had been in a state of undeclared war for four years. A Japanese army of occupation was in control of much of the countryside and many towns and cities. In Shanghai thousands of Westerners, protected by the diplomatic security of the International Settlement, continued to live as they had lived since the British came here in the 19th century and built in the image of their own country... built banking houses, hotels, offices, churches and homes that might have been uprooted from Liverpool or Surrey. Now their time was running out. Outside Shanghai the Japanese dug in and waited... for Pearl Harbor.

  • Basie: Don't let me down kid you're an American now.

Jim: [in a Brooklyn accent] Hey how'ya doin' Frank?
