The level of narcissism in the film immediately drops as long as the director does not act in person

It is exactly the same as the director's debut, describing the love-hate relationship between mother and son. I found that as long as the director didn't act in person, the level of narcissism would immediately drop a lot. Objectively speaking, this is the best and most profound Xavier Dolan movie I've ever watched.

The most eye-catching thing is the aspect ratio. In most of the scenes, the faces and movements of the characters are strictly limited to a small square of 1:1, so that the audience can not take their eyes off the actors' performance. Scenes abound, and actress Anne Dorval's acting prowess is surprising. At the same time, the design of this small frame also implicitly corresponds to the fate of the mother and son, which is destined to be a tragedy that cannot be stretched freely. Obviously, the two scenes in which the picture is deformed and elongated are the opportunity to describe the psychological changes of the protagonist. The first time the son pushed the shopping cart on the street accompanied by Oasis' Wonderwall, vividly showing his ecstatic state of mind, as in If you watch it in a movie theater, this scene must be cheered by the audience; the other scene is close to the climax of the whole film. The mother fantasizes about the happy moments of her son's growing up in the car, which is also a scene that makes people sigh. Dolan has a genius for breaking the norm of film.

However, the film's shortcomings and advantages are equally obvious. First of all, the rhythm is very problematic. I feel that many scenes are not refined enough. The effect of cutting off a third of the repetitive dialogue will be better. The lack of white space makes most of the plot immersed in dog-blood noise and scolding. The second is the music of different opinions. Although it has been restrained compared with several previous works, the song part is still too full, making some paragraphs look like an MV, which undoubtedly greatly reduces the overall coherence of the film. Having said that, Dolan's musical taste is really unspeakable. I listen to many songs with relish, in addition to Wonderwall just mentioned, there are also Dido's White Flag, Celine Dion's On ne change pas and the ending Born to Die.

When it comes to the ending, I have to say that this is the most shocking movie ending I have seen in recent years. As soon as the music of Born to Die sounded, the male protagonist broke free from the hospital nurse, and as soon as the signature scene of flying in slow motion appeared, the screen immediately went black, and the intensity of the whole tragedy increased again. Admire the imagination of this talented director.

This year seems to be popular skills. Birds and this are both playing with the camera. Although they are not on the same level, the imagination of opening the screen is still amazing.

The hysterical protagonist, vigorous and rebellious behavior, biographical stories, and various cheap MV styles, gorgeous and highly saturated colors, and the square frame ratio will catch the audience’s attention to the performance, no matter you Do you like Xavier Dolan's highly recognizable techniques? You can't deny that this new film is more mature than ever before, but is it a bit foul to rely on the soundtrack and performance? ★★★★

Mommy quotes

  • Steve Després: Maybe, one day, you won't love me anymore. It's true. It happens.

Diane 'Die' Després: Me... I'll always be there for you. You're my priority.

  • Steve Després: I wanted to tell you... I just wanted to thank you for your patience. I know I'm rough. Like Grandma used to say when I was younger, that I was rough. Now I get it, why she said that. So I'm sorry. And when I think about the times when... When I think about how much maybe I hurt you... After, when I get my shit together... I'm so fucking sad because you deserve so much better than a fucking retard like me! So... What matters is... I'm thinking about you here, and I love you.
