It's a cyclical story! ! ! ! !

I don't think it's necessary to always compare with the play.
After reading it, there are a few points that make me guess that this story is circular:
witch disappears inexplicably
, echoes at the beginning and end,
and details of many lines
"find ANOTHER witch"
"don't REPEAT my mistake"
"your family tree will ALWAYS be a barren one"
"your Father is no Father"
"we are BACK AT THE START"

Here is an initial thought:

Cinderella wish she could have a family. baker and Cinderella got married , took the baby to a new village.

witch also came to this new village, gave birth to witch 2.0, let witch 2.0 take a good look at the garden

Cinderella was pregnant with the prince's child, and wanted to eat vegetables, baker stole the beans from the neighbor witch 2.0 and provoked witch 2.0
(in the beginning witch said to baker you were no more than a baby, and the wife was with child. Cinderella was pregnant, with baker's child, no contradiction)

witch 2.0 curse, the child Cinderella was carrying became her as soon as she was born Adopted daughter Rapunzel 2.0.

Then "father cried, mother died" , baker abandoned the baby in despair.

baby grows up to be baker 2.0

Rapunzel was pregnant with a child and was abandoned (2 princes were like this..) and ran to the village. Give birth to the child Jack 2.0

Jack and Little Red Riding Hood childhood sweetheart, into the woods, gave birth to Little Red Riding Hood 2.0

may seem far-fetched at first, but in fact the whole echoes the plot, lines, and themes. Many abrupt lines can also be explained. Excerpt from the last narration:
careful before you say "listen to me"
children will listen
careful the wish you make
wishes are children
careful the path they take
wishes come true
not free
careful the spell you cast
not just on children
sometimes the spell may last
past what you can see
and turn against you
careful the tale you tell
that is the spell
children will listen

Into the Woods quotes

  • Baker: As the Prince anxiously waited, the stepmother took matters, and Florinda's foot, into her own hands.

    Florinda: Careful, my toe!

    Stepmother: Darling, I know!

    Florinda: What will we do?

Stepmother: It'll have to go/but when you're his bride/you can sit or ride/you'll never need to walk!

[cuts off Florinda's toe and Florinda screams in pain]

Baker: Minus one toe, Florinda mounted the Prince's horse, unaware of the blood dripping from the slipper. Lucinda was next...

    Lucinda: Why won't it fit?

Stepmother: Darling, be still/cut off a bit of the heel and it will/and when you're his wife/you'll have such a life/you'll never need to walk!

[cuts of Lucinda's heel and Lucinda screams in pain]

Baker: Minus a heel, Lucinda did her best to swallow the pain.

Stepmother: It's a perfect fit your highness!

    [Lucinda faints]

  • Jack: Magic what type of magic?

    Baker's Wife: Tell him.

Baker: Magic that, uh, defies description.
