How should one's life be

Albert came out to set the table carefully, carefully deposited the money that he had worked so hard for so many years on the floor, and kept a little bit of bookkeeping. Fear of money being discovered. After the painter found out that she was a woman, she cried and begged her not to tell her pitiful appearance. The innkeeper says the painter lives with you, she can't tell the real reason but she can't say no. She is really pitiful, but what choice can she have, what method can she have against the society that has abused her since she was a child. She saves money with the dream of opening her own shop, no matter how hard and boring life is.
Joe is the complete opposite of Albert's cautious attitude towards society. He was cynical, and when his girlfriend gave birth to a child, he abandoned his girlfriend and went to the United States alone. He also hoped that Hellen could get Albert's money and take it to the United States, without thinking about how sad Albert would be if he lost the money, he only cared about his own feelings. Although some of his ideas are right, if they give birth to children like this, the children will still not receive a good education, and their lives will become very difficult. So, should the child be born and lead a very difficult life?
If Hellen and Albert are going well together, it's not going to be very happy for them either. Especially when Hellen is with a person who is so silent and can't give her sexual pleasure, life is mainly about opening a shop, small business, and it is boring without passion. So although Hellen and Joe's love Joe is such an unreliable person, at least there was a passion for joy. Let people choose, even knowing the ending is unfortunate, choose Joe instead of the boring Albert. But Albert's sullen character is a necessity for this society to live on.
In comparison, the painter's life is relatively happy. It turns out that he has a loving wife and a good job in a big house.
How did Les survive in that era? Probably there must be someone who is playing a more male role, or will the neighbors find out?
Will the times determine our character and choices?
