accept it and dissolve it

In terms of the narrative rhythm of the film, it is too slow and too slow. Compared with the similar theme of "The Exorcist", the prelude of the film is too long and makes people feel anxious. But in the last part of the film, I still felt the director's intentions. At first glance, people will think that this is a religious film that persuades you to believe in God, but in fact, I personally think that it can be explained with the words of Grandpa Jung: Resisting will persist. Whether it's the devil in the movie or everything in the real life that is resisted in the heart, one day it will appear in another form, and the only way is to accept it and finally dissolve it. There are two scenes in the film. The first is when the male protagonist enters Grandpa Anthony's yard for the first time. It is cloudy and raining, and the yellow walls are covered with mottled and moldy rain stains. At the end of the film, Grandpa An is still standing by himself. In the yard, there are still yellow walls and withered vines. The past still remains on the walls, but the sun is pouring and everything returns to peace.

The Rite quotes

  • Angeline: So you're having a final fling with atheism?

Michael Kovak: Well, I guess it's more like an ex-girlfriend who keeps coming around.

  • Father Xavier: Tell me, Michael, do you believe in sin?

Michael Kovak: Yeah, I just don't necessarily believe the devil makes us do it.

Father Xavier: He that committeth sin is of the devil.

Michael Kovak: Then that'd be all of us, wouldn't it? And if we're all of the devil, how do we fight him?
