Thirteen Assassins: The Speed of Takashi Miike and the Fission of the Times

I have never seen Takashi Miike's film, but I vaguely remember him as a guy who likes to spray a lot of blood in front of the camera just like Quentin. Later, after watching the film and flipping through his introduction, I realized that he is the number one card in the cult team. However, Thirteen Assassins is not cult at all, and it even feels like watching a serious historical drama (except for some occasional gags).

The story is also extremely simple and clear. It is a typical ancient costume routine for a good guy to defeat a bad guy. Even character appearances, fighting motivations, and wits are very old-fashioned. It is not even as complicated as our embroidered spring knife. The bloody plot of becoming a bad person is not added. Anyway, good people will never become bad, and bad people will never become good. Think about it, if such a script hits the head of a domestic director, alas, it will become an anti-Japanese drama.

But just in terms of the final look and feel of the film, it's really good, you may even accidentally be stimulated by your own sudden surge of adrenaline, and accidentally include it in the ranks of film history classics. So how did Miike do it?

speed.

This is not to say that Sanchi made the action of 13 assassins to assassinate the prince into a version of the "Run, Brothers, Brothers" movie. Like Zhu Bajie marrying his wife, he went straight to the bridal chamber without even worshipping the church. It was an uncharacteristically realistic approach. Maybe many people will naturally think of a certain work that they haven't finished reading when they hear the word "realism", but Miike's approach is to show the tension of details while retaining the dramatic conflict. It's a bit like Carver. The most obvious thing in the film is the way in which the 13 assassins' backgrounds and identities are explained. The appearance of the protagonist, Shinzaemon, directly explained the background of this action, and it was done in one go. Especially in the conversation at Doi's house, throwing out a naked woman whose limbs were chopped off by Qi Zhao, and Shinzaemon's expression, shock, anger and honesty, these characters were undoubtedly revealed in an instant.
And his nephew showed up at the brothel casino, and in just five minutes he dumped his wife, addicted to gambling, but did not dare to slacken the spirit of Bushido. This is the situation of most samurai at that time. . The spirit of Bushido in the past gradually collapsed, and he had to sink in the face of the new environment, but as long as he was summoned, he was resurrected with blood. Of course, there are guys like Hirayama Kujuro who live in a forbearance. It's not that they don't exist, it's just that the time has not come. And this idea fits the background of Qi Zhao's brutality in the film, and the people are struggling to live. As for the other assassins, they are basically outlined through dialogue, or with a few small expressions that are hooking.

After half an hour, Sanchi had already called the 12 assassins, but I watched the film, Nima, and there was still an hour and a half. So how is the hour and a half allocated? Apart from the more than ten minutes in which the 12 assassins were introduced in the cutscene, there was more than half an hour where Miike talked about their separate formation. Especially the part of entering the deep forest and encountering the 13th assassin really made me feel like I was watching The Hobbit. Get lost - meet an expert - take a bath and chat - find the right way. But it's not boring at all, why, because the ease at this moment is invaluable, and it is to contrast with the big duel. In the end, the remaining almost an hour was basically watching the battle between the two sides. Yi, why do you feel like you are watching the Battle of the Five Armies?
This decisive battle can actually be discussed separately. From giving the enemy a showdown, to the enemy being overwhelmed and overwhelmed, and then to the firefight between the two sides, it is basically a play of you chasing me and fleeing. In this section, Miike basically couldn't hold it, and started to use panorama, special, close-up, long shot, etc. Anyway, there are only things you can't think of and he can't do. Coupled with the real tricks, the entire paragraph can be seen with blood boiling and twists and turns. But there is also a small problem here, that is, Miike's shooting in this segment is actually a bit magical. Anyway, I just saw that the enemy was defeated constantly, but I had no idea that this was done by 13 people, let alone think about how they did it, only staring at the fake death in front of the camera was depressed.

I won't talk about the last one-off, it's a bit like the goods are not right. Think about it, Miike wanted to close the theme, let the protagonist talk a lot, and then kill him with one knife. Why, because this is a historical drama, the theme must be sublimated in the end. Especially after the film ended, how many years after the subtitles were written, Japan began the Meiji Restoration. To put it bluntly, I picked a point about the fission of the era of heroic decline. The last heroes are often confused or lost. They don't know why they have these missions, but if they have them, they have to work hard. This is what we call death right here.
