A story of self-seeking

The box "trolls" are undoubtedly a group of aliens. Note that troll in English refers specifically to giant cannibal monsters. This is undoubtedly the result of the so-called "public knowledge" demonization, and indeed they are not even cute at the end of the film, but the most important thing is What is happening is that humans begin to embrace their existence. This is the point: how existences from two worlds coexist harmoniously.

Trolls are rejected for their own reasons, mysterious, dirty, language barrier, their own way of life and logic. They naturally think that the things on the street are unwanted and can be dismantled and recycled at will, so they are actually very environmentally friendly. Moreover, they are good at maintenance and assembly, have craftsmanship, are diligent, and most importantly, can endure all kinds of inconveniences, it doesn't matter if they are electrocuted. It can be said that they are too tolerant, let nature take its course, rejoice in suffering, and even submit to adversity. But, they are so kind, don't hurt and disturb others, and help people secretly (drop grease on the door). If I have to compare the human race, I think the Indians are the most similar (except for the fact that they are mostly vegetarian).

Then it's about nature. There are no bad guys and no good guys in this movie, (the boy doesn't count, he's half a troll). The villain No. 1 actually didn't kill anyone (the boy's father was spoofed and hung upside down and drove him crazy), he was actually enslaved by what he was obsessed with, and was driven to do all kinds of things. Ironically, he couldn't bear those desires at all, (allergic to cheese). It's worth noting that the command to kill the little boy at the end of the credits was given to the lord by Anti-No. 1 in disguise, so that he could escape the condemnation of public opinion or "righteousness" (the two words are not interchangeable). For non-I races, of course, it is possible to kill people. The anti-No. 1 slave is like a part under the system, "doing his own work", performing the evil of the system, but occasionally reflecting (the easter egg at the end of the film is amazing). The relatively bad one is the glasses slave, who is crazy and "killing for fun", but says "the troll is mad". The lord is also selfish, afraid of things, and has no sense of responsibility (there are no subtitles in the theater, and he does not know his specific position). The little girl is also curious and rebellious, proving her importance, and her words are only listened to and believed. She's a spoiled, defiant gold spoon girl.
However, the climax is that in the final duel, when all the people fled for their lives, it was those trolls who were used to ostriches who dared to face the challenge without fear of death. In my opinion, this is very believable. Because: 1. They have the ability, they are all mechanical geniuses, maybe that machine (note, the absolute high technology of that era, comparable to nuclear weapons) is made by them. And those who endured the electric shock (penance) found that the risk of fighting was not too much. 2 They were awakened to their nature, and it was the boy's speech that made them understand that the box is not everything and cannot be kidnapped by it, but to find their true self beyond identity. This is very difficult. It's not just cowardly escaping. In comparison, Anti-No. 1 feels that tasting cheese is his "destiny" when he is about to die. Most people cannot give up the motivation that drives themselves to do things, such as children, fame and fortune, food, sex, and sensory enjoyment. (The pianist at sea would rather die on the boat) The boy's words "It's not the box, the cheese makes you, you make you" is the point of the question, if one has to do something in life, it is to find the true nature (nature), get rid of the control of the senses and desires, and find the Self (true self) from the ego (self). The process of liberation and rescue in the film is more credible than Avatar, deeper than How to Train a Dragon, and really resonates. I love this movie so much, think about it!

It seems that it is very popular in cartoons now to use little monsters who don't speak human words as the protagonists, such as the Minions, or the box monsters in this film. The style of this film is a bit dark on the surface, but it is actually quite young, and I never understand it. The process of being accepted can be guessed from the beginning. Fortunately, I prefer the whole form of stop-motion animation, and the ending egg also makes the audience realize the difficulty of the creator.

The Boxtrolls quotes

  • Eggs: [practicing his manners] It's a pleasure to meet you! It's a pleasure to meet you.

  • Winnie: [When Eggs states that he is a Boxtroll] Oh... really? Then let's see you fit into your box!

Eggs: Err... I can't right now.

    Winnie: [nods head] Ummhmm.

    Eggs: I'm long boned.
