But, by no means.
Silent films rely primarily on action to grab the viewer's attention. A silent film without action and narration will not "succeed", and there is no such silent film. As a result, the action and the motives and plot behind the action became the basic elements of the film of that era. Without action, there would be no film. Because we can't imagine how a still picture or a picture with only sound (of course not yet) can grab the viewer's attention. Therefore, to say that silent films can only be expressed through action is not a problem but a logical truth. The silent film stars represented by Chaplin are, without exception, early action stars. Therefore, what really drives the development of silent films is not the story itself, but the action; it is those funny or thrilling actions that push people to continue watching. The plot is less important than the dancing on-screen characters.
This film is one of the representatives of the genre...Unfortunately, all silent films do not "discover the voice" - in Bresson's words - but instead focus and give full attention to the activity on the actor.
