"Spring Goes and Spring Comes Again" - Kim Ki-deok's Zen World

The young monk and the old monk lived in a paradise-like place. The temple is small and surrounded by a peaceful lake surrounded by mountains. It can be said that this is a holy place for self-cultivation, and the monks who are in it must be masters. Because they can endure the unbearable loneliness of ordinary people. The only tool they have to communicate with the outside world is the little wooden boat. When you row across the lake, you have to open the symbolic wooden door and you have to wade out to get out. The temple is like a drifting boat, and the film also artistically renders the temple adrift many times, moving in the lake, which is also a hint of the changes in the world.
What Kim Ji-deok wants to tell is not just a story about a temple in the mountain, an old monk and a young monk in the temple. His films will not leave the two themes of redemption and desire. Of course, linking these two themes with Buddhism has a deeper field worth exploring.
【Spring】
Spring represents the new life and hope and vitality. The season of recovery is also the season of prosperity.
The little monk is talented and intelligent, and is deeply loved by his master. After all, the little monk is only a child, and his playful nature is the same as that of ordinary children. Full of curiosity about everything, of course, his environment determines that everything he is is nature.
At first everything seemed harmonious and peaceful. The little monk was playing by the clear stream and became interested in the small fish in the water, so he caught the fish and tied the fish with stones. The small fish could not bear the weight of a small rock and swam away with difficulty. Seeing this, I know Kim Ki-duk still won't tell a light story. The picture is still elegant and beautiful, but the plot has begun to turn heavy. The little monk saw a frog jumping happily beside the rock, so he caught the frog and wrapped a rock around the frog's body. The frog stumbled into the water, and no amount of bouncing power could resist the added burden. Then there is the snake. The little monk must not be timid about such dangerous animals. He skillfully grabbed the snake's head and tied the stone to the snake's body. The snake crawls more slowly, making its way through the stones. The little monk smiled recklessly, proud of his behavior. He felt happy to see these animals suffer, and at this time the Buddhist teaching of compassion was completely forgotten by him. His laughter penetrated the valley, and his teeth were still not fully grown. These have laid the groundwork for the later development of the little monk, and maybe it should be the sentence: three years old see old.
A person's behavior in childhood can predict a thing or two about his future.
All this is seen by the old monk, and of course he will punish the behavior of the apprentice.
The old monk took a very clever way to educate the apprentice: after the young monk fell asleep, the old monk also tied a big rock to the apprentice's back. After the little monk sobered up, he found that he had been disciplined by his master and begged the master to forgive him. The master asked him to rescue the animals, and if they were not dead, he was allowed to remove the stone from the little monk. The master said a meaningful sentence: If one of them dies, then the shadow will really press on the little monk's heart like a stone, and he will follow him for the rest of his life.
The little monk rowed the boat with difficulty to the stream. He found the white-bellied little fish, and the small stones on its body finally killed it. The frog's vitality was tenacious, and it was still jumping with difficulty. The little monk took off the stone from the frog's body. The snake had already struggled to death, and the sight was terrible. The little monk was shocked by the result he had caused in front of him, and he could only cry helplessly. The old monk taught his apprentice a lesson in a unique way.
Spring is a symbol of vitality. But the little monk has become a discordant element, and he represents the power that persecutes life. Also learned a lesson.
[Xia]
The little monk has grown into a handsome boy, and his physical maturity is obvious. He has entered the midsummer stage of his life, and adolescence is of course restless, just like the scorching sun and the noisy insects in summer. The power of physiology will not be weakened by religious factors. The desire for women germinates in the hearts of young monks, and the hearts of young monks are unstable. Among them is a suggestive scene: when the young monk was collecting herbs, he found a snake that was mating. The two snakes were intertwined. The young monk was fascinated by it, which also aroused his curiosity and carnal desire.
The arrival of the young woman undoubtedly attracted the attention of the young monk. It can be said that it is his first contact with the opposite sex since he was born, which must be full of freshness and curiosity. Young monks also have a strong temptation to women. The longer they get along, the more affection spreads in the hearts of the two lonely people like the growth rate of an ivy. They are always playing with fire, and the subtle contact further stirs each other's hearts.
Finally everything came. Beside the stream, two young bodies were intertwined, gasping for breath. After taking off his clothes, what he saw at this time was nothing but the most natural behavior of a man and a woman. The needs of the flesh overcame the precepts in the heart of the young monk. All stemmed from desire and instinct, the young monk broke his precepts again.
We can see yourself in the young monk, contradictory and tangled. I sincerely recite Buddha every day and be a devout believer of the Buddha, but I can't control myself and do things that go against my beliefs. The only difference between us and young monks is our identity, and maybe we don't have faith yet.
Paper ends can't contain fire. When the master discovered the relationship between the woman and his apprentice, he was furious and sent the woman away. The young monk was very sad. He grew up and was no longer as obedient and obedient as he was when he was a child. So I chose to leave and leave this holy place where I grew up.
When he left, he still took the Buddha statue and said goodbye to the master. into the real world.
The flashy modern society is too different from the environment in which he lived before, and young monks will inevitably appear at a loss and out of tune.
Summer is full of moist and ambiguous taste, and the confusion and passion in this season will eventually pass.
Xia's chapter came to an abrupt end with the departure of the young monk. Only the old monk remained in the temple, guarding his gods.
[Qiu]
I don't know much about Buddhism, but I also understand that there is a theory of karma and reincarnation. Everything has a cause and there will be an effect. Doing good deeds will lead to retribution.
The meaning of autumn is also here. Sow in spring, and autumn will surely bear fruit. If a good seed is sown, it will surely reap a rich harvest. If you do a lot of injustice, you will also get the bitter fruit you sowed in this season.
The old monk is still alone in this lake temple, devotes himself to cultivation, and perhaps is also waiting for the unexpected return of his apprentice.
When the old monk saw the news of the wanted apprentice from the newspaper, some were not only surprised, but more convinced that the apprentice would definitely come back here.
The arrival of autumn dyes the leaves on the mountains red, and the water on the lake shimmers in the sunlight. Everything is solemn and golden unique to autumn. Not only the joy of a bumper harvest, but the yellowing plants can also make people feel sad. Autumn hints at the young monk's prime years. He should have been an accomplished age, but the young monk became a fugitive who murdered his wife.
This is the absurdity of life, you are sure or expect to get a satisfactory result, but often in the process of reaching this result, something unexpected will knock you down. Maybe the will is not strong enough, or the fate is too dangerous, always everything is full of unknown and variable.
This is the case with the little monk: because of his love, he left the temple to find his lover; it was also because of love that he was so angry at his lover's betrayal that he made a big mistake and committed the precept of killing.
The surly and irritable apprentice lost his temper at the persuasive master, hysterically cursing loudly in such a quiet place, "Love is my greatest sin." This is the apprentice's confession. Because the love is too deep, I let myself go astray. The monks should have cut off their emotions and desires, but the little monk always touches these forbidden places.
In order to make the apprentice meditate, the master wrote the Heart Sutra on the open space in front of the temple. He ordered the apprentice to carve these words with a knife, and it took a lot of effort for the apprentice to finish carving these heart sutras. Then he fell asleep on the floor, exhausted, and the police who came to arrest him also helped to color the engraved words.
The young monk in his prime is violent, and his heart is full of resentment for dissatisfaction with reality. He thought that by cutting off his thick hair, he could regain his self-centered self, but the filth of the world had accumulated too deep in his heart. Even if he carves a good heart sutra all night long, he cannot be redeemed from his inner demon.
He kills with the same dagger, shaves his head, and engraves his words, and both sinful things and holy things are done with the same tool. Killing and redemption may not be unrelated.
The little monk wanted to choose an extreme method of suicide, covering his facial features with a piece of paper with the word "closed" written on it. Until I couldn't breathe, tears wet the paper. The old monk discovered the young monk's suicide and beat him severely. The punishment this time is different from when he was a child. He can no longer reason with peace of mind. Only through physical punishment can it be effective.
The little monk was taken away by the police, and what awaited him was an unknown prison sentence. This parting is also the last parting between master and apprentice.
[Winter]
In the freezing winter, the mountains are covered in silver and snow-song. The light lake water no longer flows, forming a thick ice surface. People can walk freely on it, and the small canoe is also put aside.
Winter is deep and silent. Everything in the world becomes lifeless this season. Some are just lonely and desolate. When people's life reaches old age, it can be said that it has entered a cold winter, and everyone will falter when they are old.
The old monk is really in his twilight years, and there is not much time left. His death had a sense of religious ritual, and he strictly followed the Buddhist precepts throughout his life, and even the way of death was with piety and solemn feelings.
He used a piece of paper with the word "closed" written on it to cover his facial features that could vent his anger, and set himself on fire in a small canoe. His life was also fulfilled at this moment.
The door was opened again, and in came the apprentice who had returned from serving his sentence. He is no longer young, and his face is not as sharp as before. The aura of the whole person has changed greatly. He slowly walks on the ice, every step is very stable.
He returned to the temple again, but the master was no longer there. He knew how the master left, and bowed respectfully to the wooden boat that had been idle for a long time, as if he had seen the master himself.
Entering the temple, a snake climbed out of the master's clothes, and the decoration of the hall remained unchanged.
The little monk is really different, maybe in prison he has truly devoted himself to the Buddha. Understand the truth that was not transparent before.
He practiced martial arts in the ice and snow, and became an expert in martial arts. The previous surly and impetuous has long been washed away, and it is the young monk who has entered his twilight years who has truly converted to Buddhism from the heart.
A blindfolded woman had brought her child to be abandoned. The child's features are very similar to those of the little monk when he was young.
Women are always reluctant to show their true colors, and do not let their guard down when sleeping. She left the temple with a heartless heart, but she didn't expect to fall into the ice cave before she walked far, losing her life. The child woke up in the middle of the night and climbed to the ice cave where his mother died. The cry woke the sleeping monk.
He picked up the dead woman and lifted her mask. When the monk saw the face of the woman, he was obviously surprised. Here Jin Ji-de sold a pass, and did not take close-ups of the women. Maybe the monk and the women knew each other before.
The monk tied a heavy rock around his waist and held a Buddha statue; he went naked and started another atonement. This time it was his own punishment, and he wanted to gain true inner peace through such a ceremony.
The harsh winter couldn't stop him from climbing the mountain with difficulty, torn his feet, and fell, and all the hardships did not stop him. After many disasters, he finally climbed to the top of the mountain. The scenery below the mountain is speechless, and the sun rises as usual. He was exceptionally detached and calm under the rising sun, and he completed his redemption. Looking at the temple on the mountain that has a connection with him, he was indifferent and finally detached.
Winter is over, and the little monk's life has been fulfilled.
He and the old monk are actually a set of sharp contrasts, one is almost perfect, the other was once lost and even desperate. But in fact, we all know that the life of the little monk is more vivid and real. Everyone makes mistakes and may be bound by inner demons. To get rid of all the fetters and return to a normal life, we can only rely on our own redemption and understanding. Some people spend their whole lives in the summer and autumn of their lives, trapped in the vicissitudes of the world and unable to extricate themselves.
Although the little monk broke the precepts, in the end he became the maintainers of the precepts. That is to say, the little monk became an old monk and took in new little monks. Life is made up of reincarnations, spring goes and spring comes again.
===================================================== =============================================
It's spring again, new The little monk really looked the same as the previous little monk. In fact, the director is implying that everyone's life has an amazing similarity and a sense of fate.
The new little monk was also full of interest in the surrounding nature, and his behavior was even more cruel: he added stones to the mouths of fish, frogs, and snakes, and the mutilation of life began again. We saw the birth of another little monk....
Human nature is good or evil, it is always a topic that cannot be answered.
The door is slowly closed, and the lake water is still flowing.
four Seasons.
Spring is gone and will come back.
