There is a blind spot here - we don't understand, or even want to understand the dark side of society in the past. That is the truest and most universal aspect. Struggling, rolling. Who doesn't want to be a good person. But the truth is not always what we want.
PS: The beginning part is the protagonist's past, which is an important plot clue. If you ignore the beginning, you can't understand the ending.
