The death penalty should not exist for revenge, save the soul with forgiveness

Matthew committed a heinous crime as an accomplice with another accomplice. The nun never said that Matthew should not be punished, she was just trying to save a soul that the world thought was completely hopeless and sinful.
Sentenced to death as an accomplice, the principal was commuted by one grade because he was poor. Matthew hated the injustice of the law and the injustice of the government. He did not reflect on his crimes. Maybe he felt that the attitude of the society towards him and the hatred of the family of the deceased had made it unnecessary for him to reflect on his guilt.
The film focuses on describing Matthew's attitude of not reflecting on his guilt at all, and it seems that he is completely unworthy of the nun's care and rescue. But how can you expect a person who is completely abandoned by society, called a beast by everyone, eager to kill and then punished relatively unjustly, to seriously reflect on his guilt? In fact, every criminal is a product of this society and a victim of the dark side of human society.
Killing can't solve the problem, trying to save those sinful souls is the best thing to do in the view of the nun. At the end of the film, Matthew finally repented of his crimes, sincerely prayed for the dead to rest in peace, and apologized to the victim's family. He achieved true self-salvation. Is this effect brought about by the death penalty? Obviously not. It was a few good-hearted people who didn't know him at last, and let him know that the society didn't just hate him and curse him. It wasn't just his family who didn't think he was just a "beast". There was still some beauty in this world. things exist. It was these beautiful things that saved his soul and, to a certain extent, the souls of the victims' families.
It is conceivable that without the existence of the nuns and others, Matthew would never repent, he would only die with resentment towards the world, and his death would never take away the sorrow of the victim's family.
When almost everyone in this world hates you, I believe that the choice of most people is not to repent but to fight back with the same hatred. I have to say that this is sad and distorted. Those whose souls need redemption are not just those criminals in prison. In fact, almost all souls in this world need repentance and redemption. We need more people like nuns and old lawyers to save them.
