where the truth lies

I have never heard that Akira Kurosawa made such a film in the Soviet Union, and it was an unexpected gain after watching it.

Del Su is an ordinary hunter, he belongs to the forest like a fish belongs only to the water. In the "his" forest, he seems to be omnipotent, he has a keen sense of smell and extremely keen observation, which makes him like Tarzan of the ape, showing extraordinary survivability like a hero in this environment. Like a myth, he can judge the physical signs of people passing by by looking at the footprints, and he can know the next terrain from the bark. He is omnipotent in the forest, and there is no storm/flood/beast that he cannot overcome. But he has a beast in his consciousness, and when that beast comes, we inevitably smell the breath of death. When he began to fear the will of the mountain god in his heart, he had already begun to hang down and endangered. When his eyes could not see clearly, he was already dead. As for the final form of death, it did not matter to him. Is this a tragedy? No, this is a story that happened before, a trajectory that a complete truth has traveled in the world.

Watching the scene of his life in the city is heart-wrenchingly painful, as if a hero is imprisoned and a dragon meets a shoal. A pleasant life is blooming in the wind in a suitable environment, not material abundance. In the forest, he is a free spirit and an almighty hero; in the city, he is just a mummified corpse!

In the forest, he is the incarnation of the simple Tao, and all life is "human" or even a dead tree, a mouse. His words made him think of leaving some food in the empty house, so that he would love every life, so that he would not want the captain's money and food. His truth is that when he started to weaken, he smelled the breath of divine condemnation, and he was not really at ease with the breath of death. He was afraid, he was uneasy, but you only felt that he was real and still strong.

Shots of big scenes fill the entire film, making the film look beautiful and authentic. Sunset glaciers, whistling wind and snow, sunset in the west, rising sun in the east, the vast reed slopes and snow fields, there is no place that cannot be an excellent photography. When the captain and Del Su were reunited, the soldiers sat around the bonfire in the upper right corner, while the two sat in the lower left corner, and the rest was night. The soldiers sang softly -- far eagle, you are back --. It's heartbreaking.

There are other things in the film that deeply attracted me, such as Del Su's innocent and simple voice shouting "captan!" meaning. When he's about to get lost, he'll say, I'm scared. When really lost, he will say I can't find the way, and finally, he said, we are lost. It's simple and pure. At home in the city, he sat on the ground wearing a blanket, staring at the little fire for a long time, fantasizing about the forest in the distance, at that time we already began to know that he was dying, or sadly felt that he was gradually cold, Gradually leave.
His death was also natural. He thought that he would die in the tiger's mouth, but his tiger's mouth was ultimately the hands of evil people. He was destined not to be swallowed up by the forest, because he was the king of the forest! But this human society will devour his vitality and life!
