Harlow (Bud Cort), a 20-year-old high-society boy, is obsessed with death, likes to pretend to commit suicide to frighten his mother, is keen to attend funerals, and even buys a hearse. Mother was used to it, but it was unbearable, so she urged Harlow to get married and mature as soon as possible. At other people's funerals, Harlow meets 79-year-old Mulder (Ruth Gordon Ruth Gordon), an old woman who shares the same hobbies with him, and has since entered the wonderful and colorful world of Mulder.
