Painful Soul Resonance

I once wanted to write a collection of the reasoning about the origin of the old man in "Everything Is Lost". Combined with the details in the film, I deduced several possibilities of the old man's background. Then something happened to dissuade me - I watched it a few times - and when the resonance came, with a very different and powerful soundtrack, I started to grieve, not for the old man in the movie, nor for the Mr.Redford's superb performance is sad for myself. The reason is that this film can elicit a response from the aching soul, and it is a very, very painful thing to live for, to live for everything worthwhile.

All for no reason -

encountering a container collision, two bad storms, in my opinion, this is what the old man realized when he chose to go to sea one day. It is impossible to speculate why he went to sea from the film, and the only three lines are the narration of Sorry at the beginning, Virginia Jane SOS, and Fuck. Jane is most likely the name of the old man's wife, and the ring on the old man's hand may represent that the wife is still living on land. Virginia can't give much clues. You can see in Sorry's narration that this sentence has been simplified as much as possible, just like some key words have been blocked by someone. After many revisions, it seems to have a double meaning. His family and friends apologized, and the old man apologized in advance to all viewers who were about to watch the last 120-minute story of his life. It doesn't need a reason for it to happen, and since the story doesn't explain where the container came from, why it smashed into the hull, why it hit on this morning, just as the story doesn't explain why the storm happened, it doesn't have to be for the old man. The background and the reasons for going to sea are explained. It turns out that more people like it this way.

All is lost - soul, body, half day's ration

The old man has been repairing and rescuing the ship since the beginning of the story, which is the only reason to survive. You can see a lot of objects in the cabin, including books, instruments, survival tools, and hammocks. Some people live in a 200-square-meter garden, some people live in a 10-square-meter hut, and the old man lives on this boat. From the moment he goes to sea, he does not belong to land, does not belong to stability, and gives himself to the ship, and uses himself to steer the ship, and the ship's self is in the sea and in the wind. In my opinion, this series of connections can have a symbolic meaning, just like a person no longer needs pipes, whether it is a sewage pipe or a water supply pipe, no longer needs walls, no longer needs desks and computers, no longer needs three A piece of clothing, no longer need to maintain the daily rinse, no longer need the smile of the family, no longer need the fragrance of the lover. He went out, whatever was behind this door, he probably realized it was a mistake, once out it was hard to go back, he would be far away from everything he cherished.

Most people comment that this story is like "The Old Man and the Sea", but I'm more inclined to think that the story is related to another book, how close to being poor and rich is a man living on Walden Pond (not a sick sentence), I think the book gives the exact answer, but Thoreau's ability to keep himself out of danger after all, determines that his experience cannot give an answer about "how close the soul can be to poverty and wealth." This story fills this gap. The old man watched the parts of his cabin get damaged again and again. Every time an object was lost, his soul tried to grab something new. He repaired the hull, tried to send a distress signal over the radio, and later learned to use a sextant, but no matter how he rescued himself, he found that the darkness in front of him always struck at the original speed, and death was not slowed down in the slightest.

To maintain body function, you need a fixed amount of protein, sugar, and water. The body is not controlled by the soul, but in many cases the soul is restrained by the body. Watching the old man sitting in the cabin eating in the story was the saddest moment for me. Those few seconds gave me a lot of feelings. A tormented soul in a tormented body often has only one consequence, struggling to cross mountains and oceans to find something of value and then lose it, find and lose it again, until the body decays, and finally the soul dissipates.

The old man tried again and again, but could not see what kind of difficulties could stop him. He kept trying to save himself and find a new mode of survival. I think if he can get fresh water and raw fish, he can live contentedly in the rubber. In the boat, like he lives in that narrow sailboat, he doesn't even complain, doesn't compare with the past, doesn't regret. At this point, survival is just a performance. There is a power that is stronger than survival in his life. He has experienced gains and losses again and again. Later, as the story unfolds, he welcomes that cycle of gains and losses. . This reasoning solved a huge question I had when I watched the movie for the first time. The old man accidentally set the rubber boat on fire. He floated in the sea and watched the flames. He knew that he had only one fate, but he was neither regretful nor afraid. In the end, he sank. I even saw a look of joy on his face when he was in the water. More often, I convince myself that it is delusions that set up problems for me, but now, the old man is in the depths of the sea, his body will not be able to live without accident, then his soul needs to find a new sustenance, what will happen? He would rather try again at that moment. try.

This symbolic expression doesn't really make any sense at the end of the story - if you die, you die, so give it a try. But the movie can always give other "opportunities" audiences to try and inspire after resonating with the audience.

There is no doubt that living like this will be painful, and the soul will soon become miserable. This is why so many people choose stable jobs and live close to their families. They should not be blamed, because otherwise, it will be too hard. People have all-weather reason, know how to make backup plans for themselves, and always keep things in their hands. But there are a small group of people who only have half a day's reason, they make stupid decisions, make inescapable mistakes, and then they continue to make mistakes until the bitter soul loses the sweet water, the tenderness, and for what - that is. , I just want to see what life will be like behind the door.

Your happiness and well-being depend on your imagination - "Bedtime Stories". I think this sentence in this story can be interpreted as: the more you think about it, the more space you have for happiness and happiness, but don’t forget that happiness and happiness can only be obtained by fighting for it. Otherwise, there will be empty capacity, but it will never be satisfied like a glutton. Think about it, it's kind of sad.
