This is the second time I've watched this movie, and it finally got English subtitles, and I watched it with Italian friends. Compared to the first time I listened to the French subtitles of the Italian original sound, I understood a lot this time. And after that, I discussed a lot with my Italian friends, they told me a lot about the Italian classics, pop culture, Rome, etc. in the film. They will have more communication with this film.

I actually think the film has a lot of similarities with Albert Camus' Outsider, especially its discussion of death and the mundane.

Imagination is the opposite of life - parties at the Colosseum, the sea on the ceiling, giraffes in the ruins, funerals are the best thing about high society. In this pretentious film, the tears are real. The beauty of moving shots, I love those passing glimpses. It ends with a five-star moment, like waking up after a hangover, the fringes of savage life, the fleeting pleasures, the embarrassment of those buried under pomp. I most identify with the man who left Rome.

Sorrentino's new film should be seen as the protagonist's self-chasing process, and its structure is not complicated: the male protagonist encounters an identity crisis: he can't appreciate the true beauty in this chaos, and at this time the death of ten thousand people The end of the eternity of things suddenly becomes palpable. Where is the real beauty, he searched and couldn't find it, just because he was an empty space, but he tried to get close to the divine beauty. As everyone knows, that beauty comes from deep roots in this life.

The Great Beauty quotes

Andrea: Not well. Proust says that death may come to us this afternoon. Proust is scary. Not tomorrow, not in a year, but this afternoon.

Jep Gambardella: But it's evening already so it'd be tomorrow afternoon.

Andrea: Turgenev said: "Death looked at me, noticing me."

Jep Gambardella: Don't take these writers so seriously.

Andrea: Who should I take seriously then?

  • Jep Gambardella: Many think that a funeral, is a fortuitous event, without any rules. That's not true. A funeral is a high-society event par excellence. You must never forget that at a funeral you are appearing on stage.
