Needless to say

A long time ago, I saw a fresh little movie on Rotten Tomatoes with a high score. The name of the movie is Enough Said (Chinese translation is no more words). Finally got a chance to see it today.

The heroine is played by Julia Louis, an actress I really like. Peaceful and funny, with a very unique way of expressing comedy. She doesn't exaggerate, she doesn't make faces, she doesn't act ugly, she doesn't do weird things. She has always done comedy in a natural and simple way, and I think such comedians are the best. Not deliberately, but can make people smile knowingly. At the same time, I recommend her TV series Veep.

The actor is played by James Gandolfini. Unfortunately, this film became his legacy. I haven't seen the other films he's acted in, only that it seems like he used to portray the Italian mafia a lot (a bit like that). I once read a foreign film review, saying that this movie made people see another James, and saw his rare comedy talent. I wish I could see his hidden talent in more comedies, but unfortunately there is no more Opportunity now. May he rest in heaven.

The main story of the movie is very simple. It is a middle-aged man and woman who met and met, but a series of contradictions and collisions occurred because of an interesting coincidence. The heroine Eva is a masseuse, and her daughter Ellen is about to leave home for college. At a party, Eva met Albert. Although there was no spark at the time, after getting along in the future, the two got along very harmoniously and happily. At the same party, Eva managed to get a client, a poetess. Eva often went to massage the poetess and listened to her talk about her ex-husband. After a while, she discovers that the poetess is actually Albert's ex-wife, and that the ex-husband that the poetess says she complains about every day is actually Eva's new boyfriend. After she discovered this coincidence, she did not choose a camp, but hovered between the two camps, which directly led to the contradiction in her heart and her later various critical behaviors towards Albert. Eva himself said, "I was protecting myself. I didn't protect us." In this case, Albert was embarrassed to discover the reality, and heartbroken chose to leave.

In fact, in the film, Eva's behavior is understandable. After the pain of divorce, Eva found that when the relationship is still sweet, potential conflicts are often ignored. For example, she and her ex-husband. Their conflicts are actually trivial things that seem normal to other people, but it is the accumulation of conflicts and problems that dim the relationship and eventually lead to separation. Eva has always been afraid, because she cares too much about Albert, she is afraid that she will walk into the same dead end as Albert and end up with a broken heart.

So Eva began to try to look carefully at Albert through the poetess. The poetess, on the other hand, sued Albert based entirely on her own judgment. Eva, because of her admiration for the female poet, blindly followed the accusation of the female poet. Albert is immutable, and things that were not a problem for Eva at first have gradually become a problem. So, the two people started to get weird. Eva started to pick on Albert, was too fat, couldn't speak softly, bought countless mouthwashes, kept countless toothbrushes, didn't buy a bedside table, etc.

But in fact, the film shows a very clear difference. The poetess' home is very beautiful and neat. The poetess herself is a person who loves neatness, so she criticized Albert for being dirty. When Albert said it himself, he also mentioned the female poet's dissatisfaction with himself, and joked that he was a "slob". However, when the lens was switched to Albert's house, it didn't reach the level of "slob", it was just simple and comfortable, but it just didn't put everything in perfect order.

Albert gives people the feeling of being very friendly and comfortable in the whole film, sometimes funny, sometimes romantic, loves his job, has certain abilities, and of course there are shortcomings. But in any case, it doesn't look like the "sloppy", "loser", "disgusting" ex-husband in the mouth of the poetess.

This confuses Eva. Add to that the seemingly flawless life of the poetess and fans who came to thank the poetess for saving her life with poetry. The image of the female poet has become very great in Eva's heart, so great that Eva has a tendency to want to become a female poet. It can be expressed in the fact that Eva asked Ellen and Chloe to take off their shoes and socks at home, which was actually a request from a female poet. Eva began to tend to believe what the poetess said and thought, and began to look at Albert from the perspective of the poetess.

Eva's original love and tender and delicate feelings for Albert were gradually replaced by a scrutinizing gaze. The two of them also began to fall into the whirlpool of contradictions. Until the moment when everything collapsed, several people were extremely embarrassed, and finally ended with Albert's heartbreak. When Eva went to Albert to apologize, both of them were obviously trying their best to suppress their feelings. Albert smiled wryly and said, "You broke my heart. I am too old for that." Eva could only say "Sorry" desperately. Explaining that she was protecting herself, but Albert asked her if she had ever thought about protecting their feelings, Eva realized that she had never thought about protecting their feelings at all, but was just thinking about how to prevent herself from being hurt.

Of course, the last two people came back together because of their unbreakable love. At least there is a trend that symbolizes reconciliation.

In fact, needless to say, true love is to be experienced by two people. I don't understand marriage, but I only understand a little bit about love. But in any case, in a relationship, the best way to understand is to experience it yourself. Other people's comments are not unimportant, and other people's comments must be heard. I remember reading that if the friends around you don't like your significant other, it might mean that this person isn't necessarily your best life partner.

And other people's comments are more or less with their own emotional factors, it is very difficult to distinguish between objective and subjective opinions. It's even harder to balance your own thoughts with the opinions of others.

But when we take a step back and think about it, which relationship is not progressing step by step in a joint exploration? However, the exploration must not arbitrarily come to a conclusion, with an off-track scrutiny eye, and then reluctantly move forward together, it is better to let go now and go our separate ways.

What does it mean to explore together? It means joining hands, it means communicating, it means finding problems together, it means trying to communicate and try to resolve conflicts. What can't be solved, with regret, with reluctance, with emotion, with moving, with good memories, parting ways peacefully. What can be solved, with joy, happiness, joy, friction, quarrel, and the courage to move forward together, spend life hand in hand.

Without further ado, let's go together.

Enough Said quotes

  • Will: Eva was telling me that there are no men at this party that she's attractred to.

Albert: That's OK, there's no one here I'm attracted to either.

  • Albert: So while you were, uh, being torn, she was poisoning our relationship and poisoning your perception of me. Now why would you want that?

Eva: I don't know, I mean, except maybe I was trying to protect myself, you know, because, you know, we've both been married before. And you know how things can turn out.

Albert: What about us? What about protecting us?

    Eva: I didn't protect us.
