spirit of space exploration

This film is officially a product of that era of space exploration. When the film was released, Voyager 1 was flying between Jupiter and Saturn, and reached Saturn a year after the film was released, and Voyager 2 was released four years later. It flew past Jupiter months ago. The Voyager 6 imagined in the film is completely a product of imagination.
Today, Voyager 1 has flown out of the solar system. Watching this film again at this time, I feel that while time is flying by, I can still feel a sense of insignificance as a human being, and I can feel a kind of mystery about the endless space. Desires, quests, and fears. This is exactly where Star Trek surpasses the Star Wars series.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture quotes

  • Captain James T. Kirk: Where is Lieutenant Ilia?

Lt. Ilia: [as the alien probe] That unit no longer functions. I've been given its form to more readily communicate with the carbon-based units infesting Enterprise.

    Ensign Perez: "Carbon-based units"?

Dr. McCoy: Humans, Ensign Perez. Us.

  • [the Ilia-probe sees Decker for the first time]

    Lt. Ilia: Decker?

Spock: [aside to Kirk] Fascinating. Not "Decker-unit".
