【Oh! Director's Q&A]

Q: Why "Oh! The Berlin Boys is black and white?

"A lot of people ask, why would you choose to make a black-and-white film in the 21st century? What I'm trying to say is, oh, are you seeing black and white? Is it a problem with the projection machine or something went wrong in post-production? But I don't think the films I make are black and white. In my heart, "Oh! Boys from Berlin" is in color, I really think so. I think choosing black and white is the only way I can make a film in this era with peace of mind. I I know that many modern people are very impatient with black and white films, and even feel drowsy. Just like Yasujiro Ozu's "Tokyo Story", I even watched it for a week, because I couldn't distinguish human faces when I was distracted. Confuses character relationships. But I find that there's nothing more true about "focusing on the movie" than that. Because we all like to see beautiful colors made by filters, like actors wearing gorgeous costumes, and stimulating human senses through just the right soundtrack. Let movies truly entertain us. But in fact, a movie is a movie, it has nothing to do with the color. The color is just enriching some kind of entertainment, for me. About the director :

A Coffee in Berlin quotes

  • Julika Hoffmann: [to a thug] what kinda guy are you? Let me guess. You were born an alcoholic because your mom couldn't stay off the booze during her pregnancy. How could she, when she got beaten up by daddy when he came home from the pub?

  • Café-Shop Angestellte: So, what it'll be?

    Niko Fischer: Coffee, please.

    Café-Shop Angestellte: To go, right?

    [pause]

    Café-Shop Angestellte: What kind?

    Niko Fischer: Just normal coffee.

Café-Shop Angestellte: Wanna try something new? Today's special is the Marocchino. For 2 Euros extra, you get a doughnut or a seed roll, all homemade and organic.

Niko Fischer: I think I'll stick with the coffee.

Café-Shop Angestellte: Sure, we've got two kinds: the Arabica and the Columbia Morning.

Niko Fischer: Which coffee tastes most like a regular coffee?

    Café-Shop Angestellte: I like both.

Niko Fischer: I'll take the Columbia.

    Café-Shop Angestellte: The Columbia, then.

    [pause]

Café-Shop Angestellte: You want milk. We've got soy milk.

    Niko Fischer: No, thanks.

Café-Shop Angestellte: Okay, then. Three Euros forty, please.

Niko Fischer: Without today's special. Just the coffee.

    Café-Shop Angestellte: Yes, three forty.

Niko Fischer: Three forty for a regular coffee?

Café-Shop Angestellte: Yeah, that's the Columbia.
