====1935====
Two young climbers from Bavaria in 1935 [ [:en:Karl Mehringer|Karl Mehringer] and [[:en:Max Sedlmeyer|Max Sedlmeyer], came to Grindelwald to climb the North Slope. Before leaving, they waited a long time for the weather to improve. The two climbers reached the level of the [[Eigerwand] station, where they made their first camp. The next day they encountered great obstacles and barely made any climbs. There was also no longitudinal progress on the third day. A blizzard came that night, and the mountains were shrouded in fog. Two days later, the cloud and mist dissipated briefly, and the mountain was visible at that moment. The figures of the two climbers reappeared, slightly above the first camp, but seemed to be preparing for the fifth camp. It didn't take long for the thick fog to hide the mountain and climbers again. After a few days, the fog finally cleared, leaving nothing but white snow on the north slope. Their frozen bodies were later recovered at an altitude of 3,300 meters, now known as "[[:en:Death Bivouac]".

Andel Heckmair's successful ascent in 1938 gained his teammates 37 years of life-saving experience (Vunger climbed the cliff and successfully retreated) and 35 years of crosscutting experience of hinterstoisser. Every step of success is to march on the body of his predecessor.

In fact, the best climbers should be the local guides.

North Face quotes

  • [first lines]

    [in German, quoting English subtitles]

    Luise Fellner: [voiceover] When you're at the bottom - Toni once told me - at the foot of the wall, and you look up, you ask yourself: How can anyone climb that? Why would anyone even want to? But hours later when you're at the top looking down, you've forgotten everything. Except the one person you promised you would come back to.

  • [last lines]

    [in German, quoting English subtitles]

    Luise Fellner: [voiceover] All I know is that death spared me, and that Toni went away forever that day. One has lived if one has loved. There are times when I find this infinitely hard to believe. Most days I feel that I am alive. And that love is the reason for that.
