The film is set in the former Soviet Union under Stalin in the 1930s. Kotov (Nikita Mikhalkov) is a brilliant leader of the Red Army, with a wealthy family background and a happy family, is with his wife Marusa (Ingeborga Dapkunaite Ingeborga Dapkunaite) , Daughter spent a happy time in the villa together. Unexpectedly, an uninvited guest broke into here. When he uncovered the layers of disguise, people recognized him - a declining nobleman Midya (played by Oleg Menshikov) who had been missing for ten years. The arrival of Midia is like a messenger sent from hell. As he tells the story, the grievances between Midia and Kotov, the old relationship with Marusa, and the change with the times. The twisted life unfolds one by one in the story. And even more cruelly, he brought a piece of news that put the Kotov family in a desperate situation...
