Simon is just a projection of Frank.

The one who steals the painting is Frank, and Simon should be just a projection of Frank, representing a part of Frank's paranoia.

The woman who was killed was killed by Simon, which represented Frank's hatred for the heroine in his heart.

In the finale part, Simon finally died and Frank was reborn, and the reborn Frank didn't have a strong love or hatred for the heroine (as can be seen from the end of Frank's hesitation about whether to delete the last memory).

PS:
It can be seen from the repeated hypnosis plots that the hypnotist’s technique used many times during hypnosis is to keep the hypnotized person in a bystander state, and substitute what he has done into another virtual character, so that the hypnotized person can be in the hypnotic state. Watching another virtual self go through things that you don't want to go through in the safety of bystanders.

Simon: [auctioneer is barking prices] There is a painting, it's by Rembrandt. 'Storm On The Sea Of Galilee', it's called, and he's in it. Old Rembrandt, he's in the painting. He's in there, right in the middle of the storm, looking straight at you. But... you can't see him. And the reason you can't see him is because the painting has been stolen.

  • Elizabeth: We keep secrets from lots of people, but most of all we keep them from ourselves. And we call that forgetting.
