"Our sacrifice is nothing, as long as it is for the sake of the new China and for future generations to have a better world, our sacrifice is also worthwhile."
These are the two sentences that came to my mind after reading Eraserhead. The former sentence is from Thomas Hardy, and the latter sentence is from a domestic war movie.
I started watching Lynch's movies on Mulholland Drive and watched Eraserhead later. The film was just under an hour and a half, and after watching it, I tossed and turned, and couldn't sleep. Through a seemingly absurd story, the author expresses a profound question in a bold and innovative way, that is, whether human beings are worth living in this world. The following combined with the film, to explain my views:
1. Title. The title of the film is called Eraser Head, and there is only one extremely absurd performance in the film, that is, the protagonist's head is topped off, and then picked up by a little boy and sold for money. Why does the author do this? He just wanted to tell everyone that the protagonist Henry didn't exist at all. So who is the protagonist?
2. The protagonist. There is only one protagonist, and that is the weird little baby in the film. Strictly speaking, he is still a fetus, a fetus that is about to be aborted. There are many hints in the movie, such as the conversation between Henry's girlfriend's mother and him; his girlfriend's father asked him to cut the ultra-small roast chicken, and he bleed a lot, his girlfriend covered her mouth and cried; the little daughter on stage stomped and threw it The young fetus who came to power; finally the little girl said, heaven and so on, by the way, in Christian countries, people believe that the fetus who died before birth went directly to heaven. I don't agree with some fan friends who say this film is an expression of a dream, there may be elements of a dream, but it is by no means the main thing. The film adopts the double perspective of his later widely used character identity, with the fetus playing the two roles of father and baby. However, the fetus has no perception and knowledge, so the protagonist can also be said to be the father who perceives the world from the perspective of the fetus and finds that it is not worth living for (this is also the main reason why he decides to have an abortion). So it can be said that the protagonist of this film is a father who looks at the world from the perspective of a fetus, and uses a rubber head as the image of the protagonist. At the beginning of the film, he is lying in the mother's body.
3. A world not worth living: economic downturn, suffocated family relationships, polluted environment, the pain of raising a baby, disharmony between husband and wife, affair, weak relationship, lack of affection, etc. Finally, let the fetus laugh, see through the world, and calmly go to another destination - to be aborted.
It took me more than a month to read it and I took the time to write it. Some details may not be accurate, but its connotations make me unable to express my own opinions. This is also the first review I have written. Inappropriate, please give more pointers and criticism.
