For me, "Old Nowhere" first looks at a kind of "tune", or atmosphere. Everyone has the tune of their favorite movie, and this film is one of my favorites. The bleakness of a western movie, the cowboys under the background of modern society, philosophical (or seemingly philosophical) dialogue, vague but low voice, concise and bloody violence, heavy film noir, etc., can easily be combined together. I settled down and watched this not-so-happy movie. The Coen brothers are often labelled as "black humor". This film cannot be said to be humorous, but it is utterly cold humor, but it is completely dark, dark and dark, and dark and desolate. It seems that the end suddenly ends. I sank into the film and "flipped" out, and this feeling of being "flipped" out is also a so-called "don't understand" feeling. How did it end like this? But this is another intriguing movie. It's not a movie that you just watched a smile, or a movie about crying or sleeping. It is restrained, and it has a lot of stamina, which makes me chew in my heart again and again.
Violence is indispensable in the films of the Coen brothers. The type of violence in this film belongs to the current popular ones. When I watched 007 movies as a child, my mood was the same as watching Doraemon waiting to see Ding Dong escape from his pocket. Is 007 playing with some high-tech stuff again. The violence at that time talked about tricks and scenes, but "Old Nowhere" followed the "short, flat and fast" route. There were not so many flowers, and it was straightforward and bloody. And all of this is mainly concentrated on the crazy and cool killer in the film. The killer's actor Javier Bardem took a lot of effort to end his life with the help of others in "Deep Sleep". In the film, it was much smoother for him to send others home alone. Unlike Byrne who doesn't like to use guns and likes to add some "gadgets" with his bare hands to kill people, the killer in the film uses a heavy weapon to kill people after being extremely fierce and unassuming. The villains who have left a big name in the history of film are all cruel but iconic characters. The killer of "Old Nowhere" is very cold. His low voice is as cool as Al Pacino, but hollow but deep. His eyes looked cold and unfathomable, he killed people without blinking, and his words and deeds carried some literary atmosphere. This villain was enough to be recorded in film history.
One of the highlights of this film is the actors. Except for the aforementioned Javier Bardem, old Tommy naturally does not need to say, his eyes are more hollow, and a sense of powerlessness has deeply attached to the policeman he plays. Josh Brolin interprets a stubborn and tenacious modern denim with a trace of respectable sadness. The most interesting character is Carson, played by Woody Harrelson. He was very cool at first, but when he came across a real born murderer, Li Marxiecai, the contrast between before and after performance is strong. It is also because Woody didn’t play at this time. Many roles are reflected in the outstanding performance. One of the major features of the film’s performance is its "internal power", which is consistent with the film’s tone. Most of the characters are not very publicistic characters, and the characteristics of the characters are naturally revealed from the inside to the outside, which slowly infects the audience.
The most memorable thing about this film is the feeling of "unsupported", not only "the old have no one to rely on", it is "the old have no one to rely on". The place where the story takes place is often sparsely populated, and a sense of desolation hits on the face. Not to mention the fate of the characters in the film. After the cowboy accidentally got 2 million, his fate was completely unreliable. He could only run and hide. The cowboy was very busy. When he stopped for a while, he died. Carson tried to make a little money in this accident. He just told the cowboy that the cold-blooded killer was very principled, and he ran into the killer's muzzle. In the end, his despair and unwillingness made him feel sympathetic; This is even more true for his wife. When her husband died tragically, her mother died, and she was lonely and unable to rely on, she encountered a killer to "take care of the funeral." Of course, the most embarrassing thing is the policeman played by old Tommy. He and the killer have been fighting silently, but he always misses it again and again, watching the people who want to protect are killed. In the end, he was so dull that he was talking about his dreams, and the feeling of powerlessness seemed very desolate. Even a character like a killer can't grasp his own destiny. After a short "snooze", he will be in a car accident. See it, even such a NB character can't find a solid support.
The feeling after watching this film is very similar to the feeling I felt after watching "Atonement". Although the two are very different, they are both movies with regret and powerlessness in the story. It cannot be said to be a tragedy, but the ups and downs of fate, The hard work and powerlessness of people in the face of fate make people feel a little sad. Undoubtedly, this is not a very entertaining film, but it is a film that is worth watching and chewing. Perhaps what we have to do is not to "complete" it with the feeling of completing our homework because it is a well-received movie in 2007, but to calm down and feel the desolation of life that the Coen brothers brought to us. This is not A desolation that will make you feel desperate, but a power to introspect.
