Life is better than death or death

A single scene, plain shots, and simple editing. Except for the piano music that appears in the plot, there is almost no soundtrack in the whole film, including the beginning and end of the film. This is a film that relies on the detailed performance of the actors and the emotional resonance of everyone in the audience. A masterpiece, in addition to the film itself, it also brings you an indispensable contemplation of the film. When parents and relatives grow old and fall ill, children's worries are sometimes useless because "worrying" doesn't change their circumstances. You worry about them but they know that every time they report their illness to you, this communication doesn't change the status quo. What can be done has been done. But you can't really just let them get sick and do nothing. On the one hand is responsibility, on the other hand, more importantly, you really love them and don't want to lose them. But when we were young, we were never old, we had a lot of things to worry about, and we couldn't feel that as an adult, if you had trouble moving around, wearing diapers, lying in bed, and eating, drinking, and laughing, she had to be served. What is suffering every second, what is she thinking about every second, what does she want to see, what does she not want to see? Nurses with many years of work experience don't know it, but a wife who has been in love with her since she was young knows it. My wife knew that as a self-respecting person, she didn't want to see her haggard and old face in the mirror, and she didn't want her daughter to see her decayed and stiff appearance. Nasal feeding, intubation, urinary incontinence, unable to move, unable to see, unable to enjoy all the beauty of life, except that it is physiologically indicated to be alive. If I were the children in the film, I would do my best to not want my mother to die, because I love her and I need her to keep her; and if I were her wife who had been in love for many years, maybe I would also make a difference with the film. Treat her like an old man, because I love her and deeply, understand and respect her.

Amour quotes

  • Georges: [telling a childhood memory] ... some banal romance or other about a nobleman and a lower middle-class girl who couldn't have each other and who then, out of sheer magnanimity, decide to renounce their love - in fact, I don't quite remember it any more. In any case, afterwards I was thoroughly distraught, and it took me a bit of time to calm down. In the courtyard of the house where grandma lived, there was a young guy at the window who asked me where I'd been. He was a couple of years older than me, a braggart who really impressed me. "To the movies," I said, because I was proud that my grandma had given me the money to go all alone to the cinema. "What did you see?" I started to tell him the story of the movie, and as I did, all the emotion came back. I didn't want to cry in front of the boy, but it was impossible; there I was, crying out loud in the courtyard, and I told him the whole drama to the bitter end.

Anne: So? How did he react?

Georges: No idea. He probably found it amusing. I don't remember. I don't remember the film either. But I remember the feeling. That I was ashamed of crying, but that telling him the story made all my feelings and tears come back, almost more powerfully than when I was actually watching the film, and that I just couldn't stop.

  • Anne: It's beautiful.

    Georges: What?

    Anne: Life. So long.
