For the first and possibly only time, mechanical institutions; dogmatic military doctrines; and efficient armaments, underpinned by industrialized mass production, completely dominated everything in front of and behind the front. In the face of incompetent or cold-blooded senior officers, ordnance that can kill people in an instant. Looking for horses, protecting horses, saving horses, and giving horses are the only rebounds that human beings can make. That's why I never like "great war" in any sense.
