History has never been properly explained. Screenwriter Bennet used a lot of ironic, subversive common sense, and contradictory settings in the film, which is really wonderful.
I'm going to see a play in London, it's super stage-like.
The film mentions some poems. My favorite is Hardy's drummer Hodge. The translation of the last paragraph is really good:
Yet portion of that unknown plain
Will Hodge forever be;
His homely Northern breast and brain
Grow to some Southern tree,
And strange-eyed constellation reign
His stars eternally.
"He will grow into a big tree in the south,
with the simple mind and heart of the north, and
let the stars twinkle with strange eyes and rule
his life forever"
