Ali (Mathias Schoenaerts) and Stephanie (Marion Cotillard) are people living in two worlds whose lives would never have intersected.
Ali is a simple-minded guy with developed limbs, he does things simply and directly, and rarely considers the feelings of others. Because of his rudeness to the people and society around him, and the people and society around him reciprocate his rudeness—his life sucks. He has a five-year-old son, but his wife has left them. He had no fixed job and income, so he had to take his son to go to his sister in another city. Along the way he can only make a living by picking up leftovers and stealing from others. Even so, he never reflected on why reality was so cruel. After finding his sister, Ali began to look for a job. When applying for a security position, the supervisor asked him to give him a reason to hire him, and he could only say "trust me". What can he say, he has nothing but boxing and a sister and son. He didn't even know how to cherish what he had: he gave up boxing after the death of the boxing coach; his sister took good care of him and his son, but he didn't know how to be grateful and rewarded; he didn't know how to rely on his son. Take care of and educate him - Ali is an unacceptably simple big child, a person who lacks love. Without love, Ali's soul has long been rusted.
Stephanie lives in another world, she has a decent job - acting as a killer whale watch in the aquarium; she has a good material foundation, and she has her own BMW when Ali can only rely on other people's hitchhiking car; she has amazing beauty and often prides herself on getting men to notice and excite. Even so, Stephanie lacks love, lacks true love for her boyfriend, for life, for others and herself.
An incident brought two people who lacked love together - Stephanie lost her legs after an accident at the aquarium, and she also lost hope for life. She was far away from her relatives and friends, she gave her beautiful clothes to others, she imprisoned herself in her home, hiding her body and soul in darkness. Without love, Stephanie's soul also rusted.
Ali had helped Stephanie before, so in desperate times Stephanie called him. For Ali, Stephanie didn't make much of a difference before and after losing her legs. So he invited Stephanie to swim in the ocean, and they ate together, chatted together, and had sex together. In the days that followed, Ali unconsciously saved Stephanie's rusty soul. Stephanie began to re-open the window of her heart and regain her enthusiasm for life. It was the phone call to Ali in desperation that allowed Ali to appear and save her, but in fact, it was Stephanie who gave herself a chance to save herself. Only you can truly save yourself.
Stephanie slowly fell in love with Ali and even allowed Ali to kiss her on the lips during sex, but Ali didn't realize he was in love with Stephanie too. At one point, Ali hooked up with other women and slept with Stephanie in front of Stephanie.
Ali continued to pay a heavy price for his simplicity: his sister was fired for his ignorance, his brother-in-law put a gun at the head and told him to get out, and he suffered a lot in the black market. Faced with all this, Ali chose to flee. Society's brutal reward for him also culminated in an accident - he nearly lost his son.
Every man, at some point in his life, will suddenly have a qualitative change in his understanding of life. It is said that this moment for Ali came too late, but fortunately it came. Ali realized what was the most precious thing in his life. "The bones in other parts of the body will grow back when they break, but not when the bones in the palm are broken, so you have to be careful before every punch..." Stephanie called him, and Ali cried helplessly Be like a child. He begs Stephanie not to hang up his phone and tells Stephanie he loves her. At this moment, Ali finally grew from a child to a man. Also at this moment, he was rescued by Stephanie.
In fact, the two mutual salvations of these two souls stemmed from love. Only when you know how to love others can you know how to love yourself, and only when you truly know how to love yourself can you truly know how to love others.
Only love can save a rusty soul.
