Cronenberg's experimental stage play

The French taste in cinema is so elusive. This year, "Cinebook" selected Cronenberg's "Metropolis" as the second best ten. The famous Canadian director who started his career in horror films has always been a frequent visitor to film catalogs. This year's new work is also controversial, and the first thing to do is to choose a young idol to be the leader. I can't guess how many commercial calculations are involved in this, and the effect presented now can only be said to be quite satisfactory.

Frankly speaking, this film, which is adapted from the novel of the same name by an American postmodern writer, is full of a strong experimental flavor. The whole look and feel is obviously different from that of a film with a traditional concept, and it is more like a one-act play on the stage. A monotonous dialogue scene is set up in a small space, but the topics discussed are mixed with themes of the financial industry, and sophisticated technical terms are pouring out.

I can only feel with emotion that not all novels are suitable for adaptation into movies. Of course, this is not to deny Cronenberg's script, but to say that adapting such an extremely literary work into a movie takes unpredictable risks. It is worth mentioning that there are also actors and stars who have appeared in an endless stream. Unfortunately, most of them only play for about 10 minutes, which is completely unresolved. When I saw the star-studded lineup in the trailer, I thought that there would be many wonderful acting duels. the scene!

Nothing now. All that's left is a young actor juggling people in a luxury RV, talking about the financial crisis, and the fortunes he lost in a day. Hmm... that's right! There's also a well-worn theme: the global financial crisis. I don't think many viewers want to go to the cinema to find out about this!

Cosmopolis quotes

  • Benno Levin: You want me to be a helpless robot soldier, and all I could be was helpless.

  • Vija Kinsky: This is also the hallmark of capitalist thought: enforced destruction. All industries have to be harshly eliminated. New markets have to be forcibly claimed, and old markets have to be re-exploited. Destroy the past, remake the future.
