Shadow of a Doubt (1943)

This is still a film that made its way to IMDB250 in August 2012.

The film tells the story of a criminal and his niece. A man travels from New York to his sister's house in California to escape the limelight after committing a murder. At this time, the niece was immersed in fantasy and wanted to invite her uncle to be a guest at home. When the niece knew that her uncle was coming, she was very happy. When my uncle came, he brought gifts to the whole family, and everyone was very happy. However, when my uncle discovered that the murders he committed were reported in the newspapers, he secretly put away the newspapers. The newspaper is stumbled upon by the niece, but she doesn't care. It wasn't until one day that two detectives came to the house under the guise of a visit, and one of the detectives went on a date with her niece. The niece didn't know that her uncle was a suspect. The niece knew what happened through clues, but she refused to cooperate with the detective in order not to make her mother sad. When the uncle found out that the niece knew the truth, he persuaded her to keep quiet. A few days later, another suspect tragically died before he was arrested. The uncle was relieved, but the niece still suspected him. So, in the evening, my uncle set a trap, trying to smoke his niece to death with car exhaust, but it was found to be unsuccessful. Finally, the uncle decided to leave. He was on the train to push his niece off the train, but he slipped and fell off himself. That's how the movie ends.

It's a very mediocre movie, or rather, a very boring movie. It is under the banner of Alfred Hitchcock, but it has no taste of Alfred Hitchcock, the plot is neither suspenseful nor thrilling, the shooting skills are bland, and the theme is the big cliché of Hollywood movies - justice triumphs over evil! I really don't understand, how to get into IMDB250 for such an unattractive and boring movie? Is it true that European and American audiences regard Alfred Hitchcock as a god, as long as the movies directed by it are worshipped?

I'm really speechless as I write this. The topic does not need to be discussed, because this kind of drama of "police catching bad guys" and "righteous killing relatives and seeking justice" is too boring. I estimate that there are hundreds of thousands of movies like this in Hollywood. The plot of the movie is straightforward, without any twists and turns. It is the battle of wits and courage between the uncle and the niece. As a result, my uncle carelessly lost Jingzhou, his horse stumbled, and he fell off the train himself, just a big idiot. This scene really leaves me speechless! Alfred Hitchcock is very funny. When justice can't overcome evil, let the criminal die by himself. It really makes the audience feel like a fool!

There is nothing special about filming. It does not have the unique style of Alfred Hitchcock's film noir, nor the cutting-edge technology of "Reaper of Souls", nor the suspenseful and thrilling atmosphere of "Psycho". In short, the film is a very popular black and white Hollywood film. Such a movie cannot become a classic at all, and it is bound to be quickly forgotten after watching it. It seems that great directors like Alfred Hitchcock also have mediocre moments.

The funniest thing about this film is that even the actors are so ordinary. The heroine is Teresa Wright, an actress who has acted in many well-known movies, but she has not become popular herself. She was very active in the 1940s. The only movies I have seen starring her include "Home of Loyalty" and "The Golden Age", both of which are very classic and good movies. Why can't she be red? How strange. The male lead is the lesser known Joseph Cotten, hardly seen in any other Hollywood movie. The same is true for the others, they are all very unfamiliar faces, so I won't say more.

in conclusion. This is a very average, or even "poor" movie, not excellent in every way. I really regret watching this movie.

A master at the use of shadows, Hitchcock's films are far more attractive in form than in content.

    1. Xi Pang's favorite work depicts an ideal Rockwell-style American town and puts extreme evil in it. 2. Teresa White is so beautiful that Joseph Cotton plays one of the most evil villains in film history. 3. Table lectures and slowly approaching close-up shots, smoke-bearing train stations, and library depression angle rising shots and long shadows. 4. The repeated presentation of the "two" motif. 5. Widow Waltz. 6. See also the perfect murder dialogue. (9.5/10)

Shadow of a Doubt quotes

  • Emma Newton: What does he do? Oh, he's just in business, you know, the way men are.

  • Young Charlie: We just sort of go along and nothing happens. We're in a terrible rut. It's been on my mind for months. What's gonna be our future?

Joseph Newton: Oh, come now, Charlie. Things aren't as bad as that. The bank gave me a raise last January.

Young Charlie: Money? How can you talk about money when I'm talking about souls? We eat and sleep and that's about all. We don't even have any real conversations. We just talk.
