One can imagine how difficult it is for Truffaut to adapt it into a movie. On the one hand, the novel has many characters and each has their own characteristics. (The time and space of this novel is so jumping and not specific, there are only some basic atmospheres, simple descriptions of places and scenery). The more effective method used by Truffaut is to condense, regroup, cut space and simplify the narrative. In the novel, there are four or five female characters who are involved in a love triangle with Jules and Jim, but only Carter is retained in the movie, and then the plots of the other characters are extracted into Carter's story. Those lengthy paragraphs are greatly shortened by quick splicing and deletion; the other is to change the original narrative method that each paragraph in the novel can appear several perspectives to mainly focus on the perspectives of Jules and Jim; Scenes focus the plot. Truffaut's deep understanding of the novel and his unique film skills have restored the style and spirituality of the novel very well. Even before this novel or author was unknown to the outside world, Truffaut discovered the novel and perfectly adapted it into a film.
