The beginning of the story is really fascinating, because ordinary people know very little about the process of burial.
But Jack Black's acting has no breakthrough: consistent singing and dancing, consistent smile. The only surprise is the part where he goes crazy and kills the old lady, but the tears still look a little fake.
After watching the movie, I quickly wiki Bernie himself. Two points of discovery are controversial:
1. Before Bernie killed the old lady, it is said that he was caught stealing the old lady's money;
2. Bernie is gay, and it is said that there are videos showing details of gay activities.
I don't understand why the director could so lightly portray Bernie as even a bit endearing. I don't understand why Bernie's murder doesn't count as a real murder.
Hopefully Jack Black has a real breakthrough, something like Capote.
