Pelle erövraren (1987)
The film won the Palme d'Or at the 41st Cannes Film Festival in 1988.
The film tells the story of a Swedish father and son who immigrated to Denmark. A father and son came to Denmark by boat from Sweden and were hired by a housekeeper at the dock. The father and son came to work at a farmer's house. The father and son live very hard. They work hard every day, but they eat fish for three meals, and they also live in the cowshed. While the father and son were working hard, many stories happened between them and them:
1. After the housekeeper's assistant bullied his son, the father kept saying that he wanted revenge, but he was cowardly and kept his head down and did not dare to vent his anger for his son.
2. The son helped the farmer's wife buy wine, but the farmer found it and dumped it.
3. Father and son planted strawberry seeds from Sweden before their son's birthday. On his son's birthday, his father gave him a knife as a birthday present, and the two also ate fresh wild strawberries.
3. The son heard that one of the farmer's male workers wanted to save money to go to the United States, and the son planned to go with him. From then on, the two began to count the time, waiting for the day when the male worker had enough money.
4. The son of a wealthy family near the farmer fell in love with a female worker of the farmer's family, and the two had an affair and had a child. The son drowned the child and the female worker was taken away by the police.
5. Because of guilt, the son of a rich family joins a dangerous rescue and dies in the rescue.
6. In order to show his bravery, his son jumped into the icy water and nearly died.
7. An illegitimate son of the farmer escaped from the farm, but his son could not stop him. However, the illegitimate son later joined the circus and lived a free and unrestrained life.
8. The male worker who was planning to go to the United States couldn't understand the behavior of the housekeeper. When he was about to resist him, he was hit in the head with a stone and became dementia.
9. The son accidentally found an old woman whose husband went missing at sea, and the father planned to be with the old woman. The behavior of the father made the son ridiculed. After a period of time, the old woman's husband came back, but the father couldn't accept it, so he used wine to drown his sorrows.
10. The farmer is an old pervert, but his wife is barren. After the farmer had a relationship with his wife's niece, the wife finally couldn't bear it anymore and castrated him late at night.
11. The son is doing well in school, and the father is very happy. But after the father interacted with the old woman, the son did not plan to go to school for fear that other children would laugh at him. After some time, the teacher died suddenly on the podium.
12. At the teacher's funeral, the priest's son laughed at his father's behavior, and the son beat him up.
13. In order not to be deported by the Immigration Bureau because of the beating, the father and son asked the farmer and his wife for help. The lady readily agreed and promoted her son to the housekeeper's assistant.
14. The father is happy to see his son as an assistant, but the son wants the two to leave the farm and conquer the world. The father had no courage, so he had to send his son away and let him go alone.
That's the story the movie tells. From the above description, it can be found that the plot of this film is very trivial, so trivial that there is almost no complete story, which is really different! In addition, this film is not even a "running account", because there is almost no connection between these small stories, and it is basically a "record" of father and son. Really convinced the director of this film to make such a boring, hypnotic blockbuster that makes people fall asleep from time to time!
The story of this film is not complete, so the theme of the film is almost nothing. Don't say "The son has grown the courage to leave because of what he saw, and wants to conquer the world", because this understanding is nonsense and meaningless. Which hardworking people would like to be the lower class all their lives? no! Therefore, everyone wants to change their life. Although not everyone will have the courage of a son, there will still be one after all. There is no doubt that someone like a son will go out to seek development. So, does it make sense to show the obvious through a story? it's meaningless! Therefore, the only understandable theme of this film is to show the hard life of working people, and that's it. Is such a pale movie a good movie? The answer is of course no. In short, this film can't even be called a good movie, what about the Palme d'Or? Hey, it's such a movie that doesn't live up to its name, and there are still many reputations on the Internet. These people are boring!
Another thing about this movie that I find very boring is that the story of the movie is deja vu. In other words, the lives and predicaments of those at the bottom of the film have appeared in other films. Such as poor living conditions, cruel exploitation, poverty mentality, contempt for the poor by the rich, and so on. Also, related to religion, related to family, related to hatred, and so on. All in all, the story of this film is repeating the road that others have already traveled, and there is nothing new!
The only thing that catches the eye of the film is the limited number of outdoor scenes that give a sense of some of the beauty of nature. For example, crops in spring, snow and ice in winter, and smoke from cooking on the vast plains. It can be seen that film photography is the only part of the film that has a technical level, and other departments are lacking. Of course, the costumes of the actors in the film are very much in line with the identity of the poor public - too shabby! That's a plus, but it just looks too uncomfortable.
The actors in this film are mediocre. One of the leading men is Max von Sydow, who plays the father. The face of Max von Sydow is very familiar to me, but I just can't remember which of his films impresses me, which is strange. He is very old in the film, and because of the limited role, he did not impress me too deeply. The second male lead is Pelle Hvenegaard, who plays the male lead Pelle. This boy looks handsome, but his acting skills are mediocre, but his big eyes make people feel very cute. Also, is it a coincidence that Pelle is also the actor's real name? Actress Sofie Gråbøl, who plays the niece who has a relationship with the farmer, has a stunning three-point reveal. She is very beautiful in the film, it is a pity that there is no picture of her when she was twenty years old.
in conclusion. This is a bad film within a bad film, the story is boring, old, the theme is not new, and the director's shooting method is even more lethargic. In short, there is nothing outstanding about the film, and the judges of the Cannes Film Festival that year were probably flooded with water!
