The Blank Canvas

Just watched weekend in a semi-underground theater built in the 1930s. Now I'm excluding it as the second gay movie after The Twist. In fact, there is no need to distinguish whether it is a gay movie or not. The so-called love, those entanglements of desires are common to all human beings, but for gays, sex is easier and love is more difficult. But the current straight love is also the trend, so the difference is not much different.

One of my favorite lines in the movie
Glen: Well, you know what it's like when you first sleep with someone you don't know?
Russell: Yes.
Glen: It's... you, like, become this blank canvas and it gives you an opportunity to project onto that canvas who you want to be. That's what's interesting because everybody does that.
Russell: So do you think that I did it?
Glen: 'Cause you did. Well, what happens is while you're projecting who you want to be... this gap opens up between who you want to be and who you really are. And in that gap, it shows you what's stopping you becoming who you want to be.

Before you fully understand a person, what drives you to want to be close must be the most dazzling part of this person in your eyes, something you have longed for but never had. For different people, this may be bright eyes, White teeth, innocent smile, wealth, wisdom or six pack abs, etc. In Russell's eyes, the self he wanted to be was the flamboyance, courage and fearlessness embedded in Glen's body. I really like Glen's way of thinking and his art projects. Many times we don't know ourselves, until you meet another person, you suddenly project the other side you want to reach and the insurmountable gap in front of you on the blank canvas.

My favorite scene is when Glen leaves and knocks on the door to tell Ruseell he's going to America. The performances of the two handsome guys were wonderful. Russell was very relaxed, indifferent and understated, and after closing the door, his heart began to sink. Not pretending to be okay, just being caught off guard when something unexpected happens. Before he had time to panic, before he had time to get mad, he instinctively left the face that was still chatting and laughing before the door was closed. Later, the conversation between the two on the sofa was also impressive. After listening to Glen's views on marriage, Russell said 'I know you think I m an idiot because I want a relationship... but I can see it in your eyes, you want it too'. Everyone has passed the age of believing in love, but there are very few happy people who still believe in it, most people don't believe it anymore, and more people continue to convince themselves that they shouldn't believe it anymore, because real experience tells us: If something is too good to be true, probably it is. But for most of us, it's not because we think it's bad, but why bother with something that doesn't exist.

The ending reminds me of that famous quote, I love you not just for who you are, but for who I am when I'm with you. No matter how many injuries or pains you have endured, good love will achieve each other and make you a better version of yourself. So even though Glen showed up in Russell's life, and in two days, fate let him go, it's still a moving story, because at the end of the story, the kiss on the platform, in the no longer blank space On the canvas, a few words from Russell. ps, who was one step closer to the self who wanted to be, were projected.

I originally wondered whether I would be the only audience in this small theater screening hall on a Monday night like this. A total of 5 spectators can buy tickets to enter the venue. I am very sighed and relieved that this small theater in this small town that only shows niche movies has been open for so many years and has not closed down. I hope everyone has the same passion to protect endangered species to protect theaters like this.

Weekend quotes

  • Glen: Do you ever think about finding your parents?

    Russell: No, not really.

    Glen: Why not?

Russell: I don't really see the point. You know, I don't think it would change anything.

Glen: Why don't I pretend to be your dad and you can come out to me?

Russell: [laughs] That is SO weird.

Glen: Just ignore the fact we just had sex.

Russell: I don't think I can. Guess I'll try. Ok.

    [looks Glen in the eye]

Russell: Dad? I got something I need to tell you.

Glen: [pretending to be Russell's dad] What's that?

    Russell: I'm gay.

    Glen: [pretends to think] Hmm.

Russell: I like guys, not girls.

Glen: [breathes out slowly] Well. You know what, son. It doesn't matter to me. I love you just the same. And guess what?

    Russell: What?

Glen: I couldn't be more proud of you than if you were the first man on the moon.

  • Russell: I moved around in foster homes until I was about sixteen.

    Glen: [softly] Mm-hm. Fuck.

Russell: Met my best mate there, Jamie, when we were twelve. Erm yeah, it was nice, we just went around as a pair.

Glen: Fucking hell. What was it like?

    Russell: What?

    Glen: Being "in care".

Russell: It was fine. I mean, I wasn't abused or anything.

Glen: Shame, you should've got a refund. Do they know about you?

    Russell: Who?

    Glen: Jamie?

Russell: Yeah. I'm like his brother really. Everyone knows about me of my friends. Close ones, anyway.

Glen: [Glen starts snickering, bit ashamed]

    Russell: What? What?

Glen: [snickers] Is it really wrong that I find the whole orphan thing pretty sexy?

    [laughs out loud]

Russell: [smilingly] O my god. What's wrong with you?
