Many people compare "The Chasers" with "Memories of Murder". The two films are both based on real events. They both reflect the police and crime, and they both allude to reality. In my opinion, "Memories of Murder" is a movie full of regrets and helplessness. In the end, we are not sure who is the murderer. And everything that "The Chaser" shows us is so direct, a kind of cruelty straight to the heart. Different from ordinary crime movies, the perverted murderer Ji Yingming, who killed the call girls, appeared at the very beginning of the movie. The boss of the girls, former police officer Zhonghao, noticed Chi Yingming's unusual behavior early in the morning and sent him to the police station. We thought we could breathe a sigh of relief, but only then did the tragedy really begin to unfold. The film uses a lot of space to describe the group of lazy, incompetent policemen who are bound by many long rules. They protect the mayor who is showing off, but the mayor is still dung by the angry crowd. Facing the calm murderer Chi Yingming, they were helpless after beating him, and they couldn't interrogate the most crucial evidence. Prosecutors threatened police in order to win the political battle, leading to Chi Yingming's release. Officer Wu followed Chi Yingming, who was released, but was ultimately negligent and failed to save Meizhen. It seems that the police have been running and busy, and their investigation has gradually revealed the truth and the motive of the crime, but they are just one step away from the victim, so powerless, they can only let the tragedy happen.
The film is a process of saving people and self-help from beginning to end. As a result, those who saved people were not saved, and those who saved themselves were ultimately killed. Chung Ho, who was expelled from the police force, was incompatible with them, so he would use an almost masochistic way to save the girls under his command, and perhaps save his own soul. In the end, his desperate fight with Chi Yingming seemed to be the only thing he could do for the girls who were killed. So he tried his best to fight with Chi Yingming like a trapped beast. Even if the sharp knife was inserted into his thigh and the blood splashed, he was unaware. In his heart, there was only anger and only resentment for revenge. However, the presence of the police once again made people desperate. At this time, we can't enjoy the dripping of the murderer, we can only endure the pain of being castrated silently. And the thin woman, Meizhen, escaped from Chi Yingming's dungeon with her own tenacious will, and went into a canteen to ask for help. And the kind proprietress actually led Chi Yingming in. On a sunny morning, Chi Yingming raised a hammer and smashed Meizhen into pieces. The blood splashed and merged with the sun. The bright colors were outrageous, and the cruel ones were outrageous.
At the end of the film, Chung-ho accompanies Mi-jin's daughter in the hospital. It seemed peaceful and there seemed to be new hope. But none of this has actually changed. Who will be another Meizhen tomorrow?
