Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)

Continue the IMDB250 series. For me, this film only entered the list in January 2012. In fact, it has entered before, but it is always hovering on the edge of the 250 dividing line, coming in and out. Before the other IMDB250 movies are downloaded, watch them first.

The film tells the story of a couple and a vampire. In the nineteenth century, the male protagonist had a beautiful wife and a steady job. One day, his boss arranged for him to go on a business trip abroad and asked him to sign a housing agreement with a man who lived in an old castle. The male protagonist and his wife bid farewell to each other, and traveled long distances to the town where the castle is located. When the townspeople learned of his destination, they advised him not to go. The male protagonist did not follow the advice, and even though the driver did not continue to drive him, he still met the owner of the castle. It was already late at night when he came to the castle, and the actor fainted while dining in the castle. When he woke up in the morning, the actor found that there were two holes in his neck, but he didn't think so. It turns out that the owner of the old castle is a vampire, and he has sucked the blood of the hero. At night again, the vampire signs a housing agreement with the hero to move to their town, and discovers that the hero has a beautiful wife and a beautiful neck. In the middle of the night, the hero discovers the secret of vampires in a book and sees a sleeping vampire in an underground coffin. The male protagonist was very flustered, but fell off the mountain and was admitted to the hospital when he fled. At this time, the vampire was already lying in the coffin and sailed to the hero's town by boat. The hero's wife misses her husband so much that she can't look forward to it every day. At the same time, the hero's boss turned out to be a vampire's minion. He felt that the vampire was coming soon, so he went crazy and was locked up. However, after the ship with the vampires arrived, he escaped and helped the owner move into a new home. At this time, people found the ship that transported vampires. The people on the ship had been killed by vampires. Only the voyage diary told people that the plague was coming. The government immediately issued a notice telling people that the plague was coming and that patients were not allowed to go to the hospital to prevent contagion. And just like that, a lot of people in the town died. After the male protagonist recovered and returned to his wife after a long journey, the two were very happy. The hero's wife learns from the book brought back by the hero that the plague was brought by vampires, and that a woman can kill vampires, provided she is willing. After some inner struggle, the actor's wife decided to give her blood. As a result, the vampire fell into the trap of the hero's wife, forgot the arrival of the morning, and died. After the vampire dies, the actor's wife also dies in the actor's arms.

The quality of this film is indeed the same as its ranking in the IMDB250, and it can only fluctuate in the range of good films. In my opinion, this film is not a good movie. The reason why it has such a reputation and a good reputation is entirely because of its shooting style and its historical significance. In other words, the film has a place in film history, but it's not a movie worth watching for modern audiences. For me, the process of watching this film is a kind of torture. All in all, what was so good about this film in the 1920s is now mediocre, and it's not surprising that it's in and out of the IMDB250.

The story of the movie is very cliché, about how a vampire does evil and ends up being killed. There is no suspense or turning point in the plot. Of course, you can't expect too much from a movie from the 1920s, but at least the movie should have something attractive, right? This film is not at all, the plot can be guessed from the beginning to the end. Hey, the more I write, the more frustrated I get, so I won't say more. In addition, the rhythm and narration of the film are abnormally slow, which is also a common problem of old films. However, I still can't accept it. It is also a movie from the 1920s. Why are the movies of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin so good? Is it because I can't accept expressionist movies? No, I just like Sunrise. There seems to be only one answer: the movie is really ordinary, so ordinary that it makes you sleepy.

In addition to the shortcomings, the film still has advantages, which is the shaping of the horror atmosphere of the film. Castles, coffins, vampire figures, long nails, the fear of late night, etc., as well as the back image of the vampire that impressed me the most, have all appeared in later horror movies. It can be seen that this film has created a model for horror movie shooting, and it is a model for learning from many horror movies and vampire movies in the later period. Maybe that's what this film means to modern people—it sets trends and usheres in a new era. Even so, I don't appreciate these strengths of the film, because too many modern horror movies have seen it, and it doesn't resonate with this very "classical" horror. To put it bluntly, this movie is not scary at all!

As for the rest of the movie, there really isn't much to say. However, from the actors' styles and costumes, it can be seen that the standard of living in Germany in the nineteenth century was very high. No wonder Germany is so advanced. In addition, the Weimar Republic is also very good, so FW Murnau can make such a film.

I don't talk much about the actors, they are all German actors who have been unfamiliar for a long time. The male protagonist Gustav von Wangenheim is handsome and has the potential to become a popular niche in modern times. The heroine Greta Schröder has a beautiful appearance, but from her figure, it is obvious that European women have thick bodies and are not petite at all. How hard do German men work? Vampire actor Max Schreck's appearance is very similar to vampires, but it is difficult to distinguish which ones are his real-life performances and which are fake props in the film. So, I can't tell whether his acting is good or bad. Others will not speak.

In general, this is a historical masterpiece that is "ugly" now, and I personally don't like it. However, it was selected for the IMDB250, which I can understand.
