The film is the classic work of the Italian couple. The role of Cabiria had previously appeared briefly in a short film by Fellini, also played by Masina. Fellini was inspired to make a feature film about the character, creating one of the most famous prostitutes in film history.
The film tells the story of Cabiria's experience from being deceived and nearly dying, to being deceived again. Because of her occupation, most of the stories take place late at night, hence the title Nights of Cabiria. She is self-willed when she is robbed by a heartless man; she is vain when she happens to meet a big star; she is kind when she sees good-hearted people; she prays to Maria, she is pious; she is hypnotized by a magician, she is innocent; until she is deceived by a liar in the end The most proud house, although she was distraught, she was still quickly infected by a carnival team, smiling with tears in her eyes. It is this kind of optimism and truth, simplicity and perseverance, that touches every audience. The prostitute Cabiria is just a desperate means of making a living. In her heart, she is still the girl Maria with long hair looking for true love.
The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Masina, known as the "Female Chaplin", was crowned Cannes Actress.
