When I first watched it, I felt that the director was really imaginative, but the rhythm was too slow, and the filming language was too bland and unartistic. Later, in retrospect, maybe the director himself just wanted to state such a world, so it was for the purpose of statement and record. It's not beauty, even slowness and repetition are needed to solidify and emphasize what he's trying to say, not cinematic art, like "Air Chrysalis" in 1q84.
Challenging routines can be disconcerting and even scary. But truth is never distorted by subjective consciousness.
