Another Earth, Another Space, Another Self - Forgive

Watched this small budget indie film "Another Earth" last night and spent the night thinking about the ending. What is the director trying to explain?

I remember a Ukrainian movie "orange love" I watched before, and it also ended abruptly. People who believe in love think that the heroine will come back, and people who don't believe in love think that the heroine will not come back after she leaves. This "Another Earth", about Rhoda on earth 2 coming to earth 1, I thought of three endings.

Ending 1: The car accident on earth 2 still happened. Rhoda on earth 2 came to earth 1 and expected that earth 1 did not have a car accident. This is a tragic ending.

Ending 2: On earth 2, as Rhoda 1 wished, there was no car accident. Wearing a relatively high-end Rhoda2, he lived a good life on earth 2 according to the trajectory of no car accident. John found Rhoda 2 after leaving earth2 and told her all about it, so Rhoda 2 came to Rhoda1 to help her make atonement. This is the end of the comedy.

Ending 3: The car accident on earth 2 still happened, but on earth 2, john forgave Rhoda, and the two lovers lived a normal life, and john 1 went to earth 2 to find them, jhon 2 taught john 1 to learn to forgive , so Rhoda 2 came to Rhoda 1 to learn to liberate and live again.

Of these three endings, I personally think the second is the most unlikely. Although it is a comedy ending, this ending goes against the two concepts of redemption and forgiveness that the director teased out for most of the film. From Rhoda marking "forgive" on the old man's hand, it can be seen that she understands the old man's atonement and expects to be forgiven. And all this is exactly what Rhoda is looking forward to. In the first ending, during the four months that john left earth 2, we saw Rhoda 1 who was free and happy, she had forgiven herself from the heart, but the appearance of Rhoda 2 made her calm down, and the tragedy was the same on earth 2 Happened, so where should the two Rhoda's desire to be forgiven go. The director told us most directly with a tragic ending that only forgiveness is the common way out for john and rhoda on the two earths, and this "forgiveness" can only be controlled by the audience. The third ending is a relatively good ending. The tragedy happened on both Earths, but John on the other Earth forgave Rhoda, and Rhoda also forgave himself. John 1 went to another Earth to learn to forgive, and Rhoda 2 came to the Earth Church to forgive. . The director showed the audience a direct forgiveness, and then taught the audience redemption and forgiveness in the contrast. These two endings are also the endings that I can accept.

The story about the two earths is still in parallel space. The more thorough interpretation is the American drama "Lost". The same thing may have different endings in different parallel spaces. In fact, I have always believed that such a dimension really exists in the universe. So I often think about what kind of life I live in another or even other parallel spaces. It’s very simple. For example, I broke up with my boyfriend in this space, but we may still be together in another space, or the same space in another space. We broke up, but the reasons were different, or we simply passed by in another space. Regarding the parallel space theory in "Lost", it even believes that people in different time and space can sometimes sense each other. And the French movie "Two Lives of Flowers" directly feels that there is another you in the same world, and even you have passed by each other, but you can always feel each other. Many times the self that we dream of may be the self in another dimension. For example, in our life, we often feel that the scene or event at the moment seems familiar. Maybe this is what we have experienced in another time and space. This kind of deja vu should be induction. . Another example is that when you lie quietly in your room, you will find that there are some subtle movements happening in the space. Could it be that we are doing different things in different spaces? So when I do something wrong, I hope that I in another dimension will not be stupid, and I hope that I in that world will live well. Back in "Another Earth", when rhoda determined that there was another self, he expected that the space car accident did not happen, and he was not surrounded by this guilt. That's why she applied. She was more eager to be forgiven. When John failed to forgive herself, she gave John the chance to go to another earth, hoping that he would forgive himself when he saw the warmth of another earth.

Finally, let's talk about the film itself. This is a sci-fi drama. Compared with those sci-fi with big production and big stunts, I prefer this kind of sci-fi that is close to life, and it is more real. The pacing of the film itself is excellent. The dark blue and warm visual style sets off the tone and theme of the film very well. It is also worth mentioning the original sound of the film. The mysterious feeling of using the back rock is very ethereal and atmospheric, especially the original sound for the close-up of the heroine. Especially outstanding. The slightly cold and elegant beauty of the heroine is in line with the temperament of the film, I love it~~!

It's Mike Cahill's Virgo, earning a spot at the Sundance Film Festival. I'm looking forward to you~ It's a very good independent film, it is worth recommending!

Another Earth quotes

  • Richard Berendzen: Within our lifetimes, we've marveled as biologists have managed to look at ever smaller and smaller things. And astronomers have looked further and further into the dark night sky, back in time and out in space. But maybe the most mysterious of all is neither the small nor the large: it's us, up close. Could we even recognize ourselves, and if we did, would we know ourselves? What would we say to ourselves? What would we learn from ourselves? What would we really like to see if we could stand outside ourselves and look at us?

  • John's Son: What rhymes with "light"?

    John Burroughs: "Light"?

Maya Burroughs: Oh, that's a good one.
