Do the Right Thing (1989)

I have not seen the last part of AFI100 movie of. This film has no R3 subtitles, only Chinese subtitles translated by the subtitle team, which is a pity.

The story of the film is trivial, telling the story of what happened in the black community. The story revolves around a pizzeria opened by an Italian. The pizza shop is run by an Italian and two sons, and the hero works part-time in the pizza shop to deliver food. The two sons of the store manager don't get along well. The second son is often bullied by the older son, and the second son is not friendly to black people. He hates this community. The protagonist often hangs out while delivering pizza, or is on a date with his girlfriend, and the boss is often upset. In the community outside the pizza parlor, there are old people chatting, young people with nothing to do, young people who like to mess around, and Koreans who run supermarkets. When a black man was eating at a pizza restaurant, he found that there were no black people on the wall. He proposed to the boss to hang a black man on the wall, which made the boss angry and kicked him out. After a while, a young man who likes to walk around with a tape recorder was kicked out by the boss because he was playing music in the store. After the two got together, they decided to boycott the pizza place. The pizza shop has closed, but the boss reopened the door to take care of the young people, and let these two people who were looking for trouble enter the shop. Because the black man refused to turn off the recorder, the boss smashed it, and there was a scuffle. When the police arrived, they killed the young man with the tape recorder by mistake. The onlookers on the street were very angry. The actor smashed the glass of the pizza shop. Unidentified people began to swarm and ransack the pizza shop. A stutterer also set a fire. When everything turned into a post-riot, everything was quelled with the intervention of the fire brigade and the police. The next day, the actor found the pizza shop owner, asked for his salary, and left.

The film still deals with the clichéd issue of racial discrimination. The difference in this film is to look at this issue from the perspective of black people, and the actors and directors of the film are all black, which makes this film slightly different from other white films made of racism. When I first saw this film, I felt that this was a film about how black people were discriminated against, but through the progression of the plot and the ending of the film, I found that the film expressed a completely different point of view-this film is about how black people rely on groups the power to discriminate against other races.

The owner of the pizza shop is not racially discriminatory. He likes black people, likes this community, and is willing to serve this community. Of course, he also likes to make money from black people. The character of the boss represents a typical American crowd - pragmatism, the issue of race is always less than the issue of livelihood. On the surface, one of the two sons of the store manager has completely different ideas from his father. He hates black people, hates the black community, treats black people unkindly, etc. In fact, he is essentially the same as his father, and he doesn't like to cause trouble. People who don't like violence, he just likes to express himself, and he also represents a typical group of people in the United States. The male protagonist is a representative of black people. In order to make a living, he works under people of other races. Although he is very disgusted with racial discrimination, due to the strong position of white people, he will not take the initiative to cause conflicts and take extreme actions. However, black people have strong violent impulses in nature, and they have a backlog of dissatisfaction with racial discrimination, so when they have a little bit to vent, the rebellious genes in the bones of black people burst out, and the conflict in the film happened. Moreover, the black people, driven by human inferiority, contributed to the escalation of the incident - the conflict turned into a riot, and the whole incident became that the white people suffered racial discrimination in the black community! How absurd. Through these, we can see the typical characteristics of black people, violence, impulsiveness, cohesion, and also the inferiority of human beings - adding fuel to the fire, fanning the flames, and the most important thing is that racial discrimination is a two-way, when black people are in a strong position When it comes to status, disadvantaged races are bound to be discriminated against, just like the whites and blacks in the film. In short, although the events in the film are accidental, their occurrence is also inevitable.

The ending of the film is quite meaningful. The director did not express his attitude in the film, whether he supported black people or pity white people, the ending of the film was noncommittal. However, at the end of the film we see the money-first male protagonist, and the black community who soon forgets everything as if nothing happened. It can be seen that what happened to the pizza shop is irrelevant to everyone except the manager, and the occurrence of the conflict has not changed everything. Life is the same and will continue as always. This is the state of American society.

Lastly, the movie itself. The film is not good-looking, it does not have strong conflicts, only trivial and complicated life matters, such as young women combing the hair of old women, old men saving children, buying and selling ice cream, sitting on the street talking about mountains and so on. Although these detailed descriptions outline the whole picture of the black community in detail, there is nothing attractive about these little things in life, which makes me sleepy. The highlight of the movie is only the footage of the movie that is similar to a documentary. The footage in this film is real and vivid. Through the footage, you can feel that the camera is like a third person observing and recording every move of people in the black community, with a strong sense of substitution. As for everything else, it's pretty standard, and so is the music, except of course "Fight the Powe," which is sung from beginning to end, although I don't like that kind of music.

The actors in this film are not big-name actors. The actor is the director of the film Spike Lee, his performance is very real. But I didn't know he was the director at first. After watching the film, I realized that the black boy is the screenwriter and director of the film. Impressive. It was surprising how young Spike Lee looked at 32 years old at the time. The other actor, the pizza shop owner, is played by Danny Aiello. He's not very popular, but his performance in this film and in "Once Upon a Time in America" impressed me a lot. He's a good actor. The second son of the pizza shop owner, played by John Turturro, is very average. I don't see how good his acting skills are. Maybe he was young at that time. As for the other actors in the film, their performances are wonderful. Every actor who appeared on the stage played the role in a real and vivid way, and made the whole community alive, so I won't go into details.

In general, a movie about racism from a black perspective is not good, but it is worth thinking about.
