My Fair Lady (1964) I

have heard the name of this film for a long time, and finally it is time to watch it to it. The movie is very long, reaching 170 minutes, and it took two days to finish watching it.

The film tells the story of a flower girl who is trained to be a lady. When the flower girl was selling flowers, she met an arrogant linguist. The linguist sneered at the flower girl's accent and diction, and joked with others that he could turn her into a lady in six months and let her attend the king's banquet. After the linguist left, the flower girl kept thinking about his words, hoping to change herself. The next day, the flower girl found a linguist, hoping he could teach her proper English. The linguist was arrogant, and after some hesitation, he decided to take the challenge and bet his friends that he would succeed. Since then, the flower girl has lived in the linguist's big house and studied standard English every day. The alcoholic father of the flower girl came to ask the linguist for money after knowing that his daughter lived in a rich family. The linguist was persuaded by the flower girl's father, and after giving him money, he recommended him as the chief moralist to a rich man. After a few months of training, in order to verify the effect, linguists and friends brought the flower girl to the racetrack to try out the effect in front of everyone. However, only the first few words of the flower girl did not reveal any flaws, and the rest of the words revealed her original character. Everyone was unhappy, except for one young man who didn't care. After returning home, the linguist and his friends and the flower girl were unhappy, and three months of hard training began. The young man who didn't care about the flower girl's conversation fell in love with the flower girl, waited outside the door every day, and wrote letters to the flower girl every day. The flower girl was training hard and never saw him. Three months later, the flower girl attended the Queen's dinner, deceived everyone, and was a great success. Back home, the linguist and friends were very happy and celebrated each other, but said nothing about the flower girl's success. The flower girl was very sad and left the linguist's big house and went back to the place where she used to sell flowers. There, he met his father who had become a rich man. It turned out that the recommendation of the linguist made him inherit the wealth of the rich man, and he became the economic pillar of the poor. After leaving her father, the flower girl came to the linguist's mother's house and met a linguist who came looking for the flower girl. The two of them argued about going and staying, and the flower girl left. The linguist who lost the flower girl was heartbroken and felt that she could not be without her. Finally, the flower girl appeared, and the two lived happily ever after.

It's a lighthearted musical that looks happy. Watching such a movie is much more comfortable than watching some crime movies, horror movies, action movies, and suspense movies. However, this film cannot be called a complete film, because except for the male and female protagonists, other characters are not fully formed, and the plot is not very coherent. Moreover, although the time of the movie is very long, 40% of the time is spent singing, and the plot is not fully developed. After watching the whole movie, apart from remembering a few songs, there are some fragmented scenes, and there is no complete story at all.

From the plot point of view, the movie is mainly about the process of the flower girl transforming into a lady, but the movie does not describe this transformation in detail. It only shows a little bit before going to the racetrack, and skips the rest. The rest of the film is devoted to explaining the past and the future, such as how the flower girl met the linguist, the conversation between the flower girl and her father, the happy life of the flower girl's father, the conversation between the flower girl and young people, And the flower girl and the linguistic quarrel, etc., are not the focus of the film. Even if the above part is to shape the characters, these scenes do not make the characters full and vivid. For example, a friend of the linguist, he is a key character, and most of the scenes have him. But from the beginning to the end, the friend is like the shadow of the linguist, only his figure appears, and there is no key dialogue. After watching the movie, I didn't know what kind of character he was at all, and at the end of the film, he didn't explain how he ended. Whether he also likes flower girls, we don't know. Another example is the young man who pursued the flower girl. He was infatuated and single-minded, but why didn't the flower girl choose? What is the background of the young man? None of these movies show it. The character of the flower girl's father is also incomplete. At the beginning of the film, he is an alcoholic, and at the end of the film, the father of the flower girl becomes a good man. Is he a good guy? Or the bad guy? Also, why didn't the flower girl attend her father's wedding? In short, many plots of this movie are not fully explained, and the characters are not unified before and after. It is a movie that is very incomplete in all aspects.

There are only two characters in this film with distinct characters and full images, namely the male and female protagonists. The male protagonist linguist is arrogant, arrogant, not good at expressing emotions, and has a certain prejudice against women, but he still likes women. The female protagonist, the flower girl, has not received a good education, but she is kind-hearted, pure in heart, and not worldly. She loves herself and is a "good girl" according to her words. The film shows a love that transcends classes through the contradictions caused by these two characters with diametrically opposed classes, personalities, identities, etc. This is not only the point of view of this film, but also the theme that the film wants to express, that is, love is not divided into classes and status. Of course, the film also presents the phenomenon of "judging people by appearance" in British society through people's attitudes towards the heroine before and after the change, which also reflects a social reality.

I didn't know it was a musical until I watched the movie. After reading it, I was surprised to find that Audrey Hepburn still has such a sweet voice. Unfortunately, after checking the information, I found out that the voices in the film were all sung by Marni Nixon, which made me a little disappointed. The songs in the film are not very pleasant to listen to now, only a few songs sound pleasant now, such as Wouldn't It Be Loverly, Rain In Spain, I Could Have Danced All Night. Among them, I Could Have Danced All Night was covered by "Glee", which is also the best song in the whole film. Compared with the original singing in the film, Emma's cover in "Glee" is not bad at all. It turns out that she is underestimated. In general, the songs in this film, like those in "West Side Story", belong to the 1960s and are already behind the times.

In other aspects of the film, clothing, styling, and interior decoration are extremely extravagant, reflecting the luxurious life of the British upper class at the beginning of the last century. Of course, these scenes look cool too. However, there are too many false scenes in this film, such as the square in front of the theater, the street in front of the linguist's big house, the racetrack, etc. These false scenes obviously affect the quality of the film. Why not shoot live? Fake scenes are fake scenes after all, and everyone can tell the difference.

Among the actors in this film, the most outstanding is of course Audrey Hepburn, her acting is so superb. When the Flower Girl came out, I didn't even recognize Audrey Hepburn. Her speech is ugly and her appearance is average. When she first appeared on the stage, she was far from her image in my heart. Many of the weird pronunciations and tongue twisters in the whole film were easily interpreted by her. She didn't win the Oscar for Best Actress for this film, which is really wrong. The lead actor, Rex Harrison, does a great job, too, playing the megalomaniac linguist who does make one feel disgusted at times. Others are tricks, not to mention.

All in all, an incomplete movie that doesn't stand up to scrutiny in many respects. This film can only be used to have fun, or to enjoy Audrey Hepburn's performance, that's all.

Women are irrational. Their heads are full of cotton, hay and rags. There are nothing but exasperating, irritating, vacillating, calculating, agitating, maddening and infuriating hags.

When I was a bum, I lived for myself, and now I have 50 relatives, who regularly sponsor them, and I'm starting to live for others. Goddess Hepburn's acting really doesn't match her fame.

My Fair Lady quotes

  • [last lines]

Professor Henry Higgins: Eliza? Where the devil are my slippers?

  • Professor Henry Higgins: You might marry, you know. You see, Eliza, all men are not confirmed old bachelors like myself and the Colonel. Most men are the marrying sort, poor devils. And you're not bad-looking; you're really quite a pleasure to look at sometimes. Not now, of course, when you've been crying, you look like the very devil; but when you're all right, and quite yourself, you're what I would call... attractive.
