Wuthering Heights (1939)

The novel "Wuthering Heights" has never been read. Yes, I've only seen a two-episode TV movie in the UK in 2009. But the plot is basically forgotten, so now watch this best-rated "Wuthering Heights" movie version, just like watching it for the first time.

The story is about a man's love for a woman. The story unfolds through the maid's self-report. Maid Ellen was a maid at Wuthering Heights forty years ago, when a family lived in Wuthering Heights with two children, a boy Hindley and a girl Cathy. One day his father brought back a wandering orphan, Heathcliff, and Heathcliff ate and slept with them from then on. Hindley unhappy with Heathcliff's presence , once wounded Heathcliff, from then on Heathcliff held a grudge against Hindley and vowed revenge. Instead, Cathy and Heathcliff fell in love. A few years later, the owner of Wuthering Heights, the father of the children, died, and Hindley inherited everything. He immediately demoted Heathcliff to a groom, and he became a slave in the family. At this time, Cathy and Heathcliff are still in love, but because she yearns for a luxurious life, she gradually gets closer and closer to Edgar, a neighbor. Finally one day, Edgar proposed to Cathy. A hesitant Cathy spoke to Ellen, and when Heathcliff next door heard that Cathy wanted to be with Edgar, she left sadly. In fact, Cathy still loves Heathcliff the most, but Heathcliff didn't hear the second half of Cathy's words. After learning of Heathcliff's departure, Cathy searches for him in the heavy rain, but not only fails to find him, but also falls ill. Under Edgar's careful care, Cathy gradually recovered and agreed to Edgar's proposal. After several happy years between Edgar and Cathy, Heathcliff is back, and he's back with revenge. Heathcliff first bought Wuthering Heights. Because Hindley was drinking and gambling all day, he had no ability to repay. Heathcliff paid all the debts and provided Hindley to drink. Because of this, Hindley ended up drinking heavily. Subsequently, Heathcliff won the heart of Edgar's sister Isabella, married her as a bride, and led to Isabella and Edgar's feud. Heathcliff is very cold to Isabella after marriage, because he only has Cathy in his heart. The appearance of Heathcliff also left Cathy in pain and unhappy all day long. After a period of time, Cathy's body finally couldn't bear it and wanted to leave this world. As he was dying, Cathy reconciled with Heathcliff, and Cathy left happily. However, Heathcliff is still looking forward to seeing Cathy again.

This film is said to be the best "Wuthering Heights" movie version, but I haven't seen other versions, so I can't compare who is better and who is worse, I can only briefly talk about my feelings about this movie. There are three aspects to the feeling of this film, one is the strong dramatic conflict of the film, the other is the tragic ending of the story, and the third is the extreme love of the hero.

Although I said just now that I have basically forgotten the plot of "Wuthering Heights", I still remember it more or less. Looking at the film now, I can still be attracted by the plot and the ups and downs of the characters. For example, Heathcliff's salted fish turn over, Hindley's fall, Isabella's love for Heathcliff, are all unexpected. However, the most fascinating thing about the whole film is Isabella and Cathy's love for Heathcliff, and their conflict. Cathy is unwilling to let Isabella marry Heathcliff. She has both jealousy for Isabella, remorse for herself, and of course she does not want Isabella to be hurt. It is a very complex combination of feelings; and when Cathy prevented her from marrying Heathcliff. , Isabella feels threatened by Cathy, she knows Heathcliff loves Cathy, she thinks Cath is jealous of her. Because of this, when Cathy fell ill, Isabella would rather let Cathy die in order to gain Heathcliff's love. Emily Brontë has created a series of dramatic conflicts through a small number of characters, which she admires.

The film is a love story, but also a tragic one, and it has a very tragic ending. At the end of the story, all the living characters appear in the film's opening title: Heathcliff, Isabella, the maid Ellen, the footman, and a dog, these are the only survivors of the once vibrant, hilarious Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Heights. The culprit for all this is both Heathcliff and his vengeance. Heathcliff's revenge not only hurt the woman he loves, but also everyone at Thrushcross Heights and Wuthering Heights, wiping out the light around them. Heathcliff devours everything like a black hole. At the same time, Heathcliff is also suffering from the pain of revenge - thinking of Cathy and looking forward to her return. This tragic ending of the story will make everyone who watched it sigh, and I am not immune

to the revenge that caused all this tragedy, and the reason for revenge is because of Heathcliff's love for Cathy. Regarding the love between Heathcliff and Cathy, the film depicts very delicately. From the castle on the rockery to the symbolic heather, from childhood sweetheart exchanges to peeping at the neighbor's dance party, the film shows the development of their love in a very comprehensive way. But Cathy's sexy transformation as they got older caused a love rift between them. Although Cathy loves Heathcliff deeply, she has a wild heart and longs for luxury and new things. So Cathy is now close to Heathcliff and now close to Edgar. Cathy's nonchalance to Heathcliff had stabbed Heathcliff in the heart, until Cathy's confession really hurt him. Unfortunately, Heathcliff is a withdrawn, sensitive person, and has a strong desire for revenge, so Heathcliff wants revenge for Cathy's harm to him. All this is a process from love to hate. How much Heathcliff loves Cathy, Heathcliff hates Cathy as much. Hate is the extreme expression of love. So, Heathcliff's extreme love is the root of all this. Through these, we can feel that Emily Brontë sang love from another angle, that is, the story unfolds from the opposite of love - hate.

Having said so much, in fact, I have been talking about novels and have nothing to do with movies at all. For the movie itself, it doesn't feel special. The only special thing is that the story and ending of the film are completely different from the novel. After watching the movie, I especially checked the general content of the novel, and found that the film only intercepted the first half of the novel, and the stories about the death of Edgar, Isabella and their next generation were not displayed on the screen. For the adaptation of the film, it cannot be said that it is good or bad. However, after watching the movie, I feel very simple. The theme of the movie is simplified to the damage caused by Heathcliff's extreme love to Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Heights, making the movie a very simple love tragedy. Also, unlike the novel, the end of the film ends with the maid Ellen's imagination - Cathy disappearing with Heathcliff in the "castle" in the mountains. Compared with the tragic ending of the novel, the ending of the film gives the audience more hope, and also makes people feel Heathcliff's confession to himself. It can also be said that the film weakens the tragedy of "Wuthering Heights" and forgives Heathcliff's sins, making the film look less heavy and giving the audience a more beautiful feeling. For this adaptation, it is more suitable, after all, a too dark ending will make the movie heavy.

In general, the adaptation of this film has not changed the direction of the story and the characters of the characters, but it makes the film more in line with the theme of "love", and it does not look so cruel and depressing, which is still very good. Probably that's one of the reasons why this movie is called the best Wuthering Heights movie ever.

In addition, the Chinese subtitle translation of this film is very good. It was translated seven or eight years ago, which is very rare. From the annotations of the subtitles, we can know that the subtitle translation of this film is done by a translation company, and the professionals are indeed very professional.

The actors in this film are very close to the characters. Merle Oberon, the heroine, looks in line with the image of a traditional British woman. She's not particularly pretty, but she's very temperamental. In this film, she is sometimes a naughty crazy girl, sometimes a noble woman, and she performs perfectly in every state. Her acting skills on the hospital bed are also very real, and it can be seen that she is a good actor. The actor is played by Laurence Olivier, who has seen several of his movies recently. His acting skills are still good, but I didn't feel how gloomy Heathcliff he played, and he didn't feel the hatred in his heart. Could it be that his acting skills were still very young at that time? Geraldine Fitzgerald, who plays Isabella, is also very beautiful, and her image in the film is also ever-changing, but there is zero Chinese information about her, and it doesn't seem to be very popular.

In general, a movie adaptation of a classic classic, the actors are in line with the characters, and the story is adapted very well, but I don't feel how good the film is.

It is more faithful to the original work, and it is also devoted to watching it, and it is a love-hate relationship.

When I was a child watching "Wuthering Heights", I was shocked by this kind of torn, contradictory and mutual love-hate entanglement. The whole novel has a gloomy and even terrifying atmosphere, and this film restores it well. The more you love, the more you hate, the more you hate, the more you love. Hate comes from love, and love inspires hate. The first time I saw David Niven without a mustache, cute~ When will Ewan play Laurence Olivier.

Wuthering Heights quotes

  • Cathy: Are you enjoying yourself, Heathcliff?

Heathcliff: I've had the pleasure of watching you.

Cathy: You're very grand, Heathcliff. So handsome. Looking at you tonight I could not help but remember how things used to be.

Heathcliff: They used to be better.

Cathy: Don't pretend life hasn't improved for you.

Heathcliff: Life has ended for me.

[they pause and look off the balcony in silence]

Heathcliff: How can you stand here beside me and pretend not to remember? Not to know that my heart is breaking for you? That your face is the wonderful light burning in all this darkness?

Cathy: Heathcliff, no. I forbid it.

Heathcliff: Do you forbid what your heart is saying to you now?

    Cathy: It's saying nothing.

Heathcliff: I can hear it louder than the music. Oh, Cathy. Cathy.

Cathy: I'm not the Cathy that was. Can you understand that? I'm somebody else. I'm another man's wife, and he loves me. And I love him.

Heathcliff: If he loved you with all the power of his soul for a whole lifetime he couldn't love you as much as I do in a single day. Not he. Not the world. Not even you, Cathy, can come between us.

Cathy: Heathcliff, you must go away. You must leave this house and never come back to it. I never want to see your face again or listen to your voice again as long as I live.

Heathcliff: You lie! Why do you think I'm here tonight? Because you willed it. You willed me here across the sea.

  • Cathy: Heathcliff, make the world stop right here. Make everything stop and stand still and never move again. Make the moors never change and you and I never change.

Heathcliff: The moors and I will never change. Don't you, Cathy.

Cathy: I can't. I can't. No matter what I ever do or say, Heathcliff, this is me now; standing on this hill with you. This is me forever.
