The slow and long shots are drawn in the movement of advancing, pulling away, dividing and connecting, which comes from the director's full understanding and adjustment of the psychological activities of the characters and the surrounding environment. Perhaps the scene of only one level has deeply attracted and moved the viewer, but it presents the interweaving of two or even more spaces, how can we not be amazed!
A glimpse of the church
From Eugenia slowly walking into a village church, to a sly conversation with the priest, then Eugenia was about to leave in confusion, and finally the priest deliberately let him watch the pious and solemn ceremony of the women in the village - I can't imagine the depth of this. To hide the meaning, the writer Andrei believes that "the culture of a nation cannot be translated", but at least there are many limitations that can be broken. For example, they can cross the border to an unfamiliar Italy to gain a deeper understanding of the truth. But he knew that for the local people's beliefs and the essence of the nation, a foreigner could only stay on the surface sadly and could not go deep. This must be the reason why he has always longed for the Italian church, although it is close at hand but does not enter it. This is also like his deep nostalgia for his hometown, and he can only fall into an indescribable feeling of loneliness. He said to Eugenia, "The greatest emotion cannot be expressed in words."
Andrei's reality and dreams
Many times, I thought he was in so much pain that he couldn't sleep, but Andrei's vision was clearly a dream, or an imaginary. The dark room, the pattering rain, the wife's Madonna-like face, and the high bulging belly shone with a warm and holy brilliance. Some people say that the poet longed to have a child with his wife in a dream, but I don't think that's why. In his longing for his hometown and his relatives, he unconsciously transformed his wife into a virgin. He is more like a child who longs to return to his mother's womb. He is the child of his hometown mother, and his hometown is like the embrace of his deeply loved mother. .
The hills of Dosgarni, Italy, and the Russian countryside, stranger Italians and people from their homeland often intrude into the poet's space of thought, and they are inextricably intertwined, forming an inextricably gloomy spectacle. Director Tarkovsky said in a statement, "When I first saw all the footage of the film, I was amazed by the scene. The atmosphere and the state of mind of these falling marks on the footage are of the same nature." Andrei was the only messenger who entered Domenico’s heart, perhaps it was the arrival of Andrei that inspired Domenico to choose his ideal way to end the greatest glory in this life—— Burn yourself and die heroically in the square. Why are there so many people standing alone in the large square? Why is it that psychopaths can be seen frantic and most are frosty? Why is the music glitch delayed to play? Why is the dog here again, only to make a terrified wailing before Domenico burns? Andrei finally chose to complete the final mission Domenico gave him: to prove Domenico's innocence to the world. Even though the hot springs in front of the village had somehow dried up, and only women were picking up people's waste in the pool, Andrei walked through the last eight minutes of his life with difficulty and slowness. From this end of the pool to the other, the short distance cannot carry the holy shimmer. writer Andrei left a deep impression on me not his melancholy eyes, but the abrupt silver hair on the right side of his head, which was like a feather and different. I think "Nostalgia" is not limited to expressing a writer who is far away from his homeland's deep affection for his motherland. It is actually exploring an eternal topic of human civilization, looking for the origin and meaning of life. Andrei and Domenico have a heart-to-heart relationship, precisely because they are thinking about the same problem in their hearts, and feel that individuals are weak and powerless in the face of the real society. He said, "Nostalgia, my main goal: to portray a man in a state of deep alienation from the world, from himself, unable to find a balance between reality and the harmony he desires, as a result of being far away and the world's desire for completeness The longing for existence made him fall into a state of nostalgia...."
