Winterberg is no longer sharp

It is no longer Thomas Winterberg who was filming Dogma95's pioneering work "Family Gathering". After 13 years, this "Submarine" is presented again. It is no longer complicated, swaying and angry, but simple, Stagnant and calm.

Stripped of the sharpness and enthusiasm unique to young people, it has become an empty and lonely middle-aged melancholy. The man who once would rather destroy the harmony and dignity of a big family, and would do anything to show his inner justice, no longer exists. Now, the camera turns to the story of two dejected brothers, immersed in childhood trauma, unable to extricate themselves, and tormented.

I think the title of the film is probably "Submarine" to simulate the suffocation in the submerged water and the blurred vision looking into the distance. This theme of "life is a pool of stagnant water" may be familiar to domestic audiences. From this perspective, "Submarine" is really not a pleasant movie, and its unpleasantness is not just floating on the surface. Rather, it goes all the way down to the inside of the bone.

Externally, there are no flamboyant effects, ups and downs stories, or gripping sensuality, but rather obsession with dark, cool tones, trivial daily activities, slow-motion characters, and long-term stationary shots. As for the internal spirit, there is a tendency to lose oneself and give up, and the occasional warm paragraph cannot stop the repeated invasion of the torrent of depression.

To be honest, I don’t really appreciate such themes and cores. On the contrary, I think that “Submarine” has a very wonderful beginning and a very wonderful ending. They are childhoods with hints of hope, dreams and transcendence. The young brother played with the newborn in the immaculate white sheets, and named it baptism, holy and beautiful. There is no doubt that the children's scenes in this film are far more moving than the adult scenes.

It can be seen that the film wants to use the most simple way to show the relationship between siblings and father and son. It's not over-suppression, failure and chaos: one is lonely, violent and withdrawn, and the other has a son and is a drug addict.

In the end, the two of them looked from afar in the Xuetian Prison. They said few words, but most of them were speechless. One entrusted the other with their young son, and then they were about to die peacefully. Together with the highly penetrating Nordic Indie Band, The cold singing has some really moving power.

Winterberg, who said, "Now that the dust is gone, I have a clearer idea of what I want to do", is about a texture and a taste, and what he pursues is an inexplicable "feel". The atmosphere is like when my brother smoked alone on the sofa when he was a child. He was skillful and indifferent until his face was hidden in the dark, with the vicissitudes of seeing through everything, which is unforgettable.

However, in my opinion, it is very likely to be a new round of closed and self-talking loss, although there is a kind of sincerity in the whole expression, there are also a few extremely beautiful passages, a few I was moved a lot, but on the whole, it was unavoidable to have limited vision, gentleness, tediousness, and emotional precedence and self-indulgence.
