Maybe we can take this sentence from the movie as what "Days of Heaven" really wants to tell us, the two sides of human nature derived from the problem of survival are worth our thinking. We can take pity on the farmer in a grand manner, and his sincerity is exchanged for death. If he shot in time, we might not have pity on him. Whoever brings us more pain, we will give him the pity without hesitation.
Survive. We must survive, by any means necessary. He shouldn't have so much wealth, even if he kills people, he shouldn't think of us as human beings. This is a survival game. Once people are dragged into a survival game, they will return to the wild era.
Love. Love can support the survival of human beings, and it will trigger an existential crisis. This may involve ethical issues, and ethics are the enslavement ideas spread by human beings in order to avoid some existential crises. We need love, without it who knows what we will do when the crisis comes?
People can be guilty, but love is innocent!
