behind the gaze

In this day and age, we always feel that we can't see the truth, and all the information is processed and edited before it is presented in front of our eyes. However, if we cannot see the truth, does it mean that the truth does not exist?

If your husband often spends time outside behind your back, but always comes home with a mouth full of "I love you", will you have no doubts about it? Right now, the husband may be able to maintain the happiness of the marriage through lies, but in the long run, you will eventually notice the unreliable foundation of the relationship between the two from the details, which will affect the stability of the marriage. Yes, we can't always see the truth, but the truth is always there, it will ferment over time, and the result of this fermentation is the proof that the truth exists.

When the news that bin Laden was killed by the US military came, many people felt regretful and even angry. It is clear that the information we have received shows that bin Laden is a deranged terrorist. Why do many people still disagree with the fact that the US military killed him?

Despite all the media propaganda that bin Laden is an evil and crazy terrorist, the US military has not found weapons of mass destruction after the invasion of Iraq; The more intense hatred and conflict, and then the truth behind bin Laden's terrorist attack is brought to the fore before the eyes of the world. Information can be edited, processed, and blurred, but the truth will prove its existence in various ways, even if everyone will never see the truth as it really is.

■The truth cannot be erased, and efforts to distort the truth can only temporarily change the appearance of the truth, but cannot change the ultimate impact of the truth. Moreover, the very act of distorting the truth and hiding sins can lead to wrong reactions in the present moment, adding new sins. Therefore, if people cannot completely avoid sin, they should face the truth as soon as it arises, otherwise they will make mistakes again and again, and from sin comes hatred, and from hatred comes killing.

These concepts are very similar to those advocated by Buddhist believers: "Man is doing, God is watching", "It's not that there is no retribution, it's that the time has not come." That's the message of Austrian director Michael Haneke in Hidden Camera. "Hidden Camera" co-starred by French film stars Daniel Otto and Juliette Binoche won the Cannes Film Festival Best Director Award, Best Actor Award, and Jury Prize in 2005. It also won the European Film Festival that year, including Best Films and Best Director awards.

Michael Haneke is a director I like very much. In his hands, the film is not only a narrative tool or a medium to express emotions, but also a creative material to stimulate thinking, criticize history, and reflect on the system. Like a modern artist, he always creates creations with things that are readily available to people. In his works, the characters are usually ordinary images that can be seen in everyone's life, and the main parts of the plot are mostly fragments of people's daily life. After a certain special event, the content of the film goes to extremes, and it goes to be thoughtful. The audience has to think over and over after watching the entire film to gradually understand the meaning he wants to convey, and this meaning is always sharp and shocking.

■"Hidden Camera" tells the story of a family of three. One day, the family suddenly received a video tape, which recorded the scene of the morning at the door of the house. The film lasted for two hours, except for the pictures of the family going out. , nothing special. Not long after, they received a second volume of videotapes, except that the recording time was changed to night, and the content was also recording the movement at the door. But this time, a piece of drawing paper was wrapped around the tape, and on it was a drawing of a child vomiting blood.

Receiving the videotape of being watched naturally caused panic in the home, and also caused some suspicion and disputes between the husband and wife. In fact, the picture sent with him reminded the husband of a person and a past event, but he did not want to express his doubts until it was confirmed. Later, the family received a third volume of videotape, which was shot of the scene of her husband's hometown. At this point, the husband basically confirmed his suspicions, but he just said lightly that he made a small mistake with another child when he was a child, and this video tape may have been sent by the other child when he grew up.

A fourth volume of video tapes appeared soon after, with a street name and an apartment room. The husband followed these clues to the place pointed out in the film. When the apartment door opened, it turned out to be the husband's childhood playmate standing inside. The childhood friend was amazed at her husband's visit, saying she had absolutely no surveillance of his home and videotapes. But the husband didn't believe it at all, and even warned the other party that if he didn't stop fighting, he would use violence against him.

Unexpectedly, the family received a fifth volume of videotapes, which recorded the content of the conversation with the husband at his childhood playmate's house. The wife was very excited and asked her husband what he did when he was a child, and why did he hate him so much? My husband was also very excited, and he insisted that it happened when he was six years old. Who can remember what happened at that time? But beyond her husband's expectations, the videotape was also sent to his boss, which may affect his work if not handled properly.

The wife was so distressed that she was being watched and her husband refused to tell the truth. She confided these things to a male friend and cried bitterly on the male friend. Unexpectedly, this scene was secretly witnessed by the son, who mistakenly thought that the mother betrayed the family, and ran away from home that night. Since neither husband and wife knew why their son disappeared, in a hurry, the husband took the police to inspect the house of his childhood friend.

When the son was sent back by other parents, the husband did not look back and apologize to his childhood friend. However, a few days later, a childhood playmate took the initiative to ask her husband to come home, saying that she would explain the videotape for him. As a result, after her husband entered the door, the childhood playmate took out a razor and quickly wiped it on his neck. Looking at the corpse in the pool of blood, the husband was in a panic. He neither called the doctor nor called the police, but just wandered for a while and then went home.

The husband tells his wife what happened, and the wife is both afraid and suspicious of all this. What happened when they were young? ? At this point, the husband finally fully revealed the truth. The parents of that childhood playmate were their long-term workers and were from Algeria. During the 1961 Algerian parade, they were both killed by French police, with more than 200 bodies floating in the Seine that day. The husband's parents wanted to adopt the child out of guilt. The six-year-old husband spread rumors that the child had lung disease out of jealousy. The parents didn't believe it, and the doctor didn't find out the problem, so the husband coaxed the child to kill chickens and stained him with blood, in order to confirm his lie that the child often vomited blood. As a result, the child was sent to an orphanage and lost the opportunity to receive an education and live a good life.

Later, the son of his childhood playmate found the husband. The husband was very nervous and angry. He said that the police confirmed that his father had indeed committed suicide and had nothing to do with him. He also said that the incident on the video must be the son's fault. , his father did not have the intelligence and ability to do such a complex thing. The son said indifferently that the videotape had nothing to do with him. His father failed to receive a good education because of his husband's frame-up, but he still educated a good son, knowing that he should be kind and tolerant. He came today just to see the face of the man who killed his father. Now that he has seen it, that's enough.

At the end of the film, the scene of the childhood playmate being sent away while crying as a child was shown, and then the camera shot for a long time outside the gate of the sports venue where the husband's son practiced swimming.

■Who filmed those tapes? No one photographed them, but everything that happened will leave traces. They are the truth. Although no one can see them, they are there. After the fermentation of time, one day they will suddenly appear beside you and me. The shadows, fears and guilt in the heart manifest their existence.

The protagonist in the film made a mistake when he was six years old, but he did not have the courage to face the mistakes of the year when he was an adult, and tried to cover up and revise it with lies. As a result, this lie has caused confusion and misunderstanding among the people around, triggering a series of unnecessary wrong reactions, and further expanding the crime.

Just as Mayer Haneke used the story of a small town in "The White Ribbon" to explain the crime of the German Nazis, in "Hidden Camera" he used the events of a family to explain the relationship between France and Algeria. It is used to explain the hatred between the United States and Iraq, and even the hatred between the Western world and the Arab world.

If France had admitted the mistakes of colonization at the outset and faced the truth of the Setif massacre in 1945, there would have been no massacre in France in 1961. Had France admitted in 1961 the truth of what happened then, rather than trying to hide it, there might not be today's hatred between France and the countries of North Africa today.

In the same way, if the United States had admitted from the very beginning that it had made mistakes in the Middle East and the establishment of the state of Israel, it might not have expanded the international problem to where it is today, and perhaps 9/11 would not have happened. After the 9/11 incident, the United States still refused to face its own responsibilities, instead, it manipulated the media and public opinion, and blatantly sent troops to Iraq.

Can the truth be changed by a single person, an institution, or a country? For a moment, maybe the truth can be blurred, but after a long time, the truth will eventually emerge, and the tampering made to cover up the truth is not only useless, but also sows the seeds of hatred on innocent people and future generations. We cannot see the truth, but it is there, and its power is always there.

Michael Haneke uses the background of a character to point out the hatred between France and Algeria, the hatred between the United States and Iraq, the Western world and the Arab countries in a brief TV news, and a family affair. The reasons for hatred and right and wrong. Everyone can say it, but only Michael Haneke can say it in this unexpected way, so plainly and so obscurely.

In this film, Haneke raises a very horizontal issue: does the truth exist? The mainstream in the contemporary era generally believes that there is no objective and absolute truth, and the fact depends entirely on the standpoint of the viewer, and the truth only exists in the mind of the viewer. mess.

However, Haneke puts forward a different point of view. He believes that the truth is objective and absolute. Today's chaos stems from people's unwillingness to face the truth, and even try to pretend to modify the truth. He believes that truth is the sum of all real events, and that although people cannot see the big picture, this truth will reveal itself through a series of causes and effects. Today, on the one hand, we think that we see the truth, but we find that the result of reality does not match the truth. That is because the truth we see has been altered, and these alterations will eventually be corrected one by one in the causal cycle.
