All Good Things: Backlog and Out of Control

David's father let David witness the suicide of David's mother because he thought it would prevent suicide. Because of this incident, David hid under the table for a week, and a shadow of life accumulated in his heart, and he left the problem of talking to himself when he was nervous.

David wanted to be himself, not involved in the family business, to fall in love with and marry Katie, who fell in love at first sight. But because of that shadow, he was persuaded by his father to end his happy life and join the family business. He wanted to give Katie a rich and free life, but he didn't know that was not what Katie really cared about. Also because of the existence of the shadow, David did not want children in this life, and he persuaded Katie to do abortion. As a result, Katie was left with a big wound in her heart as if she had died once.

David at work is always like a drunk, farther and farther from his true self, from the David who loves life and loves freedom. Without telling David, Katie enrolled in medical school, and David felt Katie was running away and let Katie down. At Katie's mother's house, David treats Katie violently for the first time because he wants to go home, but Katie refuses to obey.

David and Katie are in love, but they don't know the real each other, and they don't understand each other's backlog of past thoughts. David is just trying his best to take on the responsibilities of what he thinks is a husband, and at the same time is too sensitive because of the fear of loss to tolerate any slight unexpected change. Under this huge pressure, the mind became more and more deformed, and the shadow became more and more powerful, becoming a powerful force to manipulate the out-of-control David in the form of violence, letting him end everything he didn't want to see.

David has been living in fear, which has become incredibly unmanageable as life piles up. So David killed his wife, used others to kill friends who knew the truth, and killed the people he used.

All the good things are no longer to be found, and all that is left is the old David in the form of a body.

The film shows the process of David's transformation very well, and every turning point is wonderful and moving. The process of killing people is omitted, and only the antecedents and consequences are shown, so that people can truly feel the powerful power of fear, as well as the ugliness and darkness after the distortion of human nature.

Contrasted with David is Katie. If David represents the ugliness in human nature, Katie can represent a little bit of beauty. It's just that Katie is also vulnerable. She failed to save David and was devoured herself instead.

It's a story about demons, but it's also a sad and heart-wrenching story. There are many such ugly scars in the history of human beings. As future generations, the only thing we can do is to try our best to spread all the love in our hearts, make beautiful love strong enough to melt all fragility and darkness, and let love become permanent sunshine. Fog, no night!

  • David Marks: Look at her. I swear to God, I didn't even know that people like her existed. She's perfect.

  • Sanford Marks: Why couldn't you have just given her what she wanted? You're a very weak man, David.
