My first Alain Resnais experience.

All I'v got from this are:
Moving Camera, people in stillness when camera moves, stillness people in background when character moves, people in the shadow, people with different directions of shadows.
Strange man with his trick.
High heels, Jewelery
Baroque architecture, Royal Court, Corridors, Fountain, mirrors, Triangle shaped trees, Statues, Staircase
Long takes
Majority text was delivered through Voiceover, Extremely loud and annoying Organ music.
Actor stays in the same gesture between transaction cuts. Actors with exact same hair and makeup throughout the film.

A few scenes did remind me of French New Wave.
the hand held camera running towards the end of the corridor, and keeps shouting "nong, nong, It wasn't true, it wasn't by force...". and then a series of overlapping editing of the camera running into the woman with wide smile and arms open.
Contrasting, in the next scene the woman wears a black cape as to she was wearing that white further dress.
A bunch of shot inserts of the woman in her bedroom with white dress on, during the scene they were talking at the bar.
Another overlapping editing scene when the woman runs into her room and jumps into her bed, also the use of breaking of 180 degree rule.

If there are people who don’t know what is called a literary film in a literary film, I am afraid this film can be used as a textbook definition: 1) French New Wave 2) Black and White Old Film 3) Literary Film Title Guide 4) Writer Film 5) Narrative Time and Space Confusion 6) Beautiful words, narration/confessions a lot 7) Exaggerated shooting techniques, such as character freezes and a series of strong flashbacks 8) The plot is downplayed, and it takes more than an hour to talk about a man seducing a woman away 9) Contains metaphors 10) Metaphysical, unintelligible.

    1. The image of poetry, the rhythm of music; 2. Return to the essence of film as video art, rather than the aid of narration; 3. There is no beginning and end ring; 4. The dialogue and struggle of desire, the dialogue between the audience and the author Fighting with each other; 5. The integrity and sense of space of the film as an independent art form.

Last Year at Marienbad quotes

  • X: I must have you alive. Alive, as you have already been every evening, for weeks, for months.

A: I have never stayed so long anywhere.

X: Yes, I know. I don't care. For days and days. Why don't you still want to remember anything?

A: You're raving! I'm tired, leave me alone!

  • X: [Last Lines] The grounds of the hotel were symmetrically arranged, without trees or flowers, or plants of any kind. The gravel, the stone, and the marble were spread in strict array in unmysterious shapes. At first sight, it seemed impossible to lose your way. At first sight... Along these stone paths and amidst these statues, where you were already losing your way forever in the still night, alone with me.
